Women’s Basketball Eyes NCAA Division III Tournament; Will Travel to Waukesha for Regional


ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team punched its ticket to the big dance after securing an at-large bid with an overall record of 17-8. The Bears, the three-seed in the four-team regional, are set to travel to Waukesha, Wis. for the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, hosted by Carroll University. WashU is set to clash with 23rd-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stout, Friday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. A live stream of Friday's contest can be found here

Friday's contest will mark WashU's 33rd all-time NCAA Tournament appearance (1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022).  

The Bears have five NCAA National Championships (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2010) and 10 Final Four Appearances (1991, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011). 

The Waukesha regional will feature top-seed, No. 13 Carroll, two-seed, No. 23 UW-Stout, three-seed, WashU, and four-seed, University of Puget Sound. All three contests will be held inside of Van Male Fieldhouse.

  • Tickets for the NCAA Division III Tournament 1st and 2nd Rounds are $15 for general admission and $10 for senior citizens, students, and children 
  • Student tickets are permissible for grade school, high school, and college students with student ID 

Scouting WashU
  • WashU is led by senior Jessica Brooks and first year Lexy Harris 
  • Brooks, an All-University Athletic Association (UAA) First Team selection, leads the Bears with 16.7 points per game, 8.2 rebounds per game, and 29.1 minutes of action per game 
  • Brooks is 16 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark in her career  
  • Harris, who was just named the UAA's Rookie of the Year, notched a spot on the All-UAA Second Team 
  • Harris sits second on the team with 15.8 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game 
  • Harris tops the team with 29 rejections 
  • First year Sidney Rogers is averaging 8.8 points per game and has dished out 56 assists on the season 
  • First year Alyssa Hughes, WashU's most dangerous long ball threat, leads the team with 46 three-pointers this season

Scouting No. 23 Stout: 
  • The Blue Devils, who are currently riding a nine-game winning streak, own a record of 21-7 
  • Stout earned the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (WIAC) automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with a 77-65 win over then No. 14 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the league championship game 
  • As the three-seed in the WIAC tournament, UW-Stout defeated UW-River Falls in the quarterfinals, 70-54, and then No. 8 UW-Whitewater in the semifinals, 69-59, to reach the dance
  • Stout enters the tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign 
  • WashU and the Blue Devils have two common opponents this season: UW-River Falls and UW-Oshkosh
    • Stout defeated River Falls three times this season, while WashU took down River Falls on December 29 
    • Stout produced a 1-2 record against UW-Oshkosh this season, while WashU dropped the 73-60 decision to Oshkosh in the McWilliams Classic 
  • The Blue Devils are led by Raegan Sorensen, Amanda Giesen, Lexi Wagner, and Anna Mutch
  • All four Blue Devils were named to the 2023 All-WIAC Women's Basketball Team
  • Sorensen is leading the charge, averaging 18.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game
  • Sorensen also tops Stout with 57 steals and 519 points this season
  • Giesen is averaging 12.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest

Scouting No. 13 Carroll: 
  • For just the third time in program history, the No. 13 Carroll Pioneers heard their named called to participate in the NCAA Division III Tournament  
  • As hosts of the regional, Carroll earned the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's (CCIW) automatic bid into the tournament by defeating then 12th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University, 88-78, in the CCIW title game 
  • CU took down then 15th-ranked Millikin University, 75-66, in the CCIW semifinal contest
  • The Pios, who are also riding a nine-game winning streak, own a 23-4 (14-2 CCIW) record
  • Carroll's last loss was on January 20 to then 8th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan, 72-68 
  • Carroll and WashU have two common opponents from the 2023-24 season: University of Chicago and Illinois Wesleyan
    • CU lost an overtime thriller, 74-68 against Chicago, while the Bears swept Chicago in UAA action this season 
    • The Pios produced a 1-2 record against IWU, while WashU lost to Illinois Wesleyan, 87-80, in overtime 
  • As a team, Carroll ranks ninth in all of Division III in scoring offense, averaging 80.4 points per game
  • Carroll also ranks second in all of Division III with a 38.4 three-point percentage 
  • The Pioneers are led by Olivia Rangel, Natalie Gricius, and Emilie Wizner as all three landed on the All-CCIW teams
  • Rangel (first team), Gricius (first team), Wizner (second team), and head coach Lindsay Schultz (CCIW Coach of the Year) hauled in conference awards
  • Rangel leads the Pios with her 18.7 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game, total assists (131), and total steals (61)
  • Gricius is second on the squad, averaging 16.2 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game
  • Wizner has racked up 107 made long balls on the year to lead the team
  • Wizner is averaging 14.5 points per game 
  • Allison Thompson has impressed on the defensive side of the ball as she has accumulated 35 rejections this season

Scouting Puget Sound: 
  • The Loggers made its way to the NCAA Division III Tournament via the Northwest Conference's (NWC) automatic bid 
  • Puget Sound defeated Pacific University, 61-57, in the NWC championship game 
  • The Loggers took down Willamette University, 70-50, in the NWC semifinal contest
  • Puget Sound owns an overall record of 19-8 (11-5 NWC) 
  • The Loggers and Bears have one common opponent, Illinois Wesleyan, this season
    • Both teams were defeated by the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan 
    • Puget Sound fell by a final of 78-77, while WashU dropped the 87-80 overtime decision 
  • Puget Sound saw three All-NWC honorees this season in Paige Gerhart (first team), Kennedy Brown (second team), and Katie Minnehan (second team)
  • Gerhart leads the team with 13.2 points per game, 7.0 rebounds per game, and 92 total assists Brown sits second on the team with 12.3 points per game
