KALAMAZOO, Mich. & ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team competed in a flurry of activity, Saturday, September 30. Half of the team completed play in the ITA Regionals in Kalamazoo, while the other half stayed back and took part in the WashU Doubles Invite in St. Louis.
ITA Regionals Day Two:
Singles Draw:
In the round of 32, sophomore
Colin Scruggs welcomed a straight set victory against Allegheny College's Anton Hedlund (6-3, 6-3). However, Scruggs dropped a nail biter in the round of 16 to Chicago's Derek Hsieh, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).
Senior
Jared Phillips took down Kenyon College's Paulo Pocasangre in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 6-3) to clinch his ticket to the round of 16. With a trip to the quarterfinals on the line, Phillips dropped his match against Case Western Reserve's Casey Hishinuma in three, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Sophomore
Eric Kuo took down Kenyon College's Rakkan Audeh in convincing fashion (6-1, 6-3). In the round of 16, Kuo came up just short against Case Western Reserve's Michael Sutanto, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4.
Graduate student
Sergiu Celebidachi lost his round of 32 match against Chicago's Arjun Asokumar (6-4, 6-4).
In the round of 32, junior
Scott Yamamoto came up short against Denison's Ethan Green (6-1, 6-2).
Doubles Draw:
Sophomore
Colin Fox and senior
Henri Ohl dropped their quarterfinal dual against Kenyon College's Eliezer Gonzalez and Paulo Pocasangre, 8-6.
In the quarterfinal round, Yamamto and Celebidachi lost to Kenyon College's Alejandro Gonzalez and Eric Zhang, 8-6.
The WashU duo consisting of Scruggs and Phillips came up short to Case Western Reserve's Vishwa Aduru and Diego Maza, 8-5.
WashU Doubles Invite:
At the WashU Doubles Invite, each pairing played three matches.
Round #1:
Pata Garcia and Radke dropped their first-round matchup by a final of 8-6.
Hester and Ouyang fell short (8-3), to Lindenwood.
Singh and Fagan defeated SLU's duo in a close match, 8-6.
The WashU duo fell just short by a final of 8-7 (7-3).
Round #2:
Fagan and Singh defeated SLU in the second round, 8-5.
Saluja and Tam dropped a close battle with a team comprised of both SLU and Lindenwood, 8-7 (7-3).
Hester and Ouyang fell short in the second round to Lindenwood by a final of 8-5.
Garcia Muriel and Radke lost its second-round match to SLU, 8-4.
Round #3:
Garcia Muriel and Radke escaped with a third-round victory over Lindenwood, 8-7 (7-5).
Fagan and Singh picked up a third-round win against SLU, 8-4.
Saluja and Tam defeated a team from Lindenwood by a final of 8-6.
In the final match of the day, Hester and Ouyang were set back by SLU, 8-6.
The Bears will return to action on Friday, October 13 for the three-day Dwight Davis Tourney that is scheduled for October 13-15.
