KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team turned in an unblemished record of 8-0 at day one of the ITA Regionals, Friday, September 29 at Kalamazoo College. After first round byes, the Bears went 5-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles action. In doubles play, the Bears have a trio of teams that advanced to the round of 16.
Singles Draw (5-0 on the day)
Sophomore
Colin Scruggs defeated Wabash College's Liam Grennon in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to advance to tomorrow's round of 32. With a spot in the round of 16 on the line, Scruggs is set to take on Allegheny College's Anton Hedlund.
Senior
Jared Phillips took down Oberlin College's Shawn Lisann (6-2, 6-0) to earn a spot in the round of 32. Phillips will square off with Kenyon College's Paulo Pocasangre tomorrow morning.
Sophomore
Eric Kuo powered past Otterbein College's Joshua Mammen in straight sets (6-1, 6-2). Kuo will take on Kenyon College's Rakkan Audeh in tomorrow's round of 32 matchup.
Graduate student
Sergiu Celebidachi welcomed a round of 64 victory against Wheaton College's Jack Booker 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 to punch his ticket to the round of 32. Celebidachi is set to tangle with University of Chicago's Arjun Asokumar tomorrow, with the winner advancing to the sweet 16.
Junior
Scott Yamamoto swept Oberlin's Rohan Gold in straight sets (7-5, 6-0). Yamamoto will compete in tomorrow's round of 32 against either DePauw's Jacob Louiselle or Denison's Ethan Green.
Doubles Draw (3-0 on the day)
Sophomore
Colin Fox and senior
Henri Ohl defeated the duo of Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk and Daniel Tulchinskiy, from Lake Forest College (8-5). Fox and Ohl will square off with the College of Wooster's Shivam Dewan and Anthony VanOyen in the round of 16 tomorrow morning.
Yamamoto and Celebidachi cruised past Illinois Wesleyan's Ian Turnbull and Benjamin Vigneri, 8-3. Having advanced to the round of 16, Yamamoto and Celebidachi are scheduled to take on Kenyon's Alejandro Gonzalez and Eric Zhang tomorrow.
The WashU duo of Scruggs and Phillips also saw success as they took down Wabash College's Augusto and Cole Shifferly, 8-5. With the win, Scruggs and Phillips will play Case Western Reserve's Vishwa Aduru and Diego Maza in tomorrow's round of 16.
The Bears will continue with ITA Regionals tomorrow, Saturday, September 30, starting at 8:30 a.m. Additionally, WashU is set to host the WashU Doubles Invite, tomorrow, Saturday, September 30. The Bears will compete against Saint Louis University (SLU) and Lindenwood University. Round one is set for 9 a.m. at Tao Tennis Center.
