RIVER FOREST, Ill./ ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team completed the second day of the Clay Court Tourney, hosted by Division I Northern Illinois University, Saturday, Sept. 16. Due to inclement weather in the area, the singles competition was called off. Additionally, the Bears wrapped play in the two-day WTN Open at Dwight Davis in St. Louis, Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 16-17. In the three brackets at the WTN Open, WashU claimed two bracket titles.
Clay Court Tourney – Hosted by NIU:
Doubles Flight 1
The No. 1 doubles duo of senior
Jared Phillips and sophomore
Eric Kuo grabbed a third-place finish after defeating WMU's Schluter and Kaizer, 7-6(4).
Doubles Flight 2
WashU's second doubles team also earned third. Sophomore
Colin Fox and senior
Henri Ohl teamed up to take down EIU's Riera/White, 6-3).
Doubles Flight 3
Just like WashU's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, the Bears No. 3 doubles team of junior
John Fakouri and sophomore
Case Fagan notched a third-place finish by claiming the 6-4 victory over NIU's Berdullas and Welker.
WTN Open – Dwight Davis:
Day one of the WTN Open featured three brackets of 16, with the red, green, and blue draws.
Graduate student
Sergiu Celebidachi and junior
Scott Yamamoto were the two Bears that competed in the red bracket. Celebidachi had a first-round bye and automatically qualified for the quarterfinals. Celebidachi then defeated Yann Frezouls to advance to today's semifinal round.
Yamamoto took down Neal Hopson to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Yamamoto squeezed by Jose Hernandez Saracho (7-6, 6-4) to advance to the semis.
Sophomore
Colin Scruggs and senior
Stefan Hester took part in the green draw. Scruggs welcomed a first-round bye and then won his quarterfinal match against Tom Schmitt.
Hester also secured his spot in the semifinals. Hester won his opening round matchup against Lorenzo Blava and defeated John Varley in the quarterfinals.
Junior
Pato Garcia Muriel and first-year
Daniel Radke highlighted the blue draw for the Bears. Both WashU Scholar Champions notched their spot in today's semifinal round. Garcia Muriel received a first-round bye and won his quarterfinal match against Sebastian Trigosso.
Radke won both of his matches, en route to a semifinal berth against teammate Garcia Muriel. Radke defeated Alex Cox in the first-round then took down Markos Prentits.
Day two of the WTN Open saw the conclusion of bracket play.
In the red bracket, Celebidachi claimed the field of 16 title after he defeated
Gaurav Singh. Celebidachi advanced to the final round with a nail-biting 6-2, 6-7 (10-4) victory.
Also in the red bracket, Yamamoto fell 6-4, 4-6 (10-8) to Singh in the semifinals.
The green bracket featured an all-Bear final with Scruggs and Hester going head-to-head. Hester came out victorious against his teammate, 6-3, 6-3, to welcome a first-place finish.
Hester defeated John Varley 1-6, 6-3 (10-7) in the semifinals, while Scruggs took down
Jeremy Ouyang (6-4, 6-2) in the semis.
In the blue bracket, teammates Garcia Muriel and Radke squared off in the semifinals. Garica Muriel won the match by scores of 6-4, 7-5 to punch his ticket to the championship round. Garcia Muriel fell in the finals to Shaan Patel.
WashU will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to compete in the ITA Regionals, Friday-Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. The Bears will also host the WashU Doubles Invite, Saturday, Sept. 30 at Tao Tennis Center.
