RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team began their 2023-24 campaign by traveling to compete in the two-day, Clay Court Tournament, hosted by Division I Northern Illinois University, Friday, Sept. 15.
Singles Flight 1
Senior
Jared Phillips fell to Illinois State University's Adrian Dibildox (6-4, 6-4) and then defeated Eastern Illinois University's William Hays (6-0, 6-1). Phillips will play in the fifth-place match against Saint Louis University's Theo Ortis tomorrow.
Singles Flight 2
At No. 2 singles, sophomore
Eric Kuo defeated NIU's Armin Koschtojan by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Kuo then dropped a close battle to ISU's Emiliano Gonzalez by scores of 5-7, 6-2, (10-7). Kuo will take on UIC's Randy Wilson in the third-place match tomorrow.
Singles Flight 3
Sophomore
Colin Fox dropped his opening match to NIU's Chris Norlin (6-4, 6-2). Fox then took down CSU's Max Sandoval with scores of 6-0, 6-1 to advance to tomorrow's fifth-place match against ISU's Tomas Valencia.
Singles Flight 4
In the No. 4 singles bracket, junior
John Fakouri secured a first-round victory over NIU's Luke Welker (6-2, 6-2). Fakouri then lost to UIC to set up a third-place match with SLU's Luca Lo Nardo tomorrow.
Singles Flight 5
Senior
Henri Ohl, playing in the No. 5 singles position, won his opening match SLU's Adam Behung with scores of 7-6 (2), 6-3. Ohl is set to compete in the third-place match tomorrow against Western Michigan University's Dimitri Moriarty.
Singles Flight 6
In the No. 6 singles draw, first-year
Nathan Tam is set to compete in the championship round tomorrow after going 2-0 today. Tam took down University of Illinois-Chicago's Elliott Dam (6-4, 6-1) and SLU's Sansh Kumar (6-2, 6-2).
Doubles Flight 1
Phillips and Kuo defeated UIC's duo of Bucan and Wilson (6-1). Phillips and Kuo are set to take on CSU's Alvarez and Sandoval tomorrow.
Doubles Flight 2
Fox and Ohl took down SLU's Ortis and Fukushima (6-1). The WashU pairing will battle WMU's Boone and Evans tomorrow.
Doubles Flight 3
In the No. 3 doubles, junior
Akshay Saluja and Tam dropped their match against ISU's Valencia and Scarlett (6-2). Saluja and Tam will take on WMU's Adesoro and Moriarty in tomorrow's consolation bracket.
The Bears will close out play in the Clay Court Tournament, tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 16. Additionally, WashU will begin play in the WTN Open, tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 16 at Dwight Davis in St. Louis.
