River Forest, Ill. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team competed well and had great success this weekend at the two-day River Forest Invite hosted by Northern Illinois University on the clay courts of the River Forest Tennis Club.
Despite going up against several other NCAA DI opponents, the Bears had several strong performances all across the board. In total, Washington U. won 23 matches combined in all of the singles and doubles flights throughout the weekend.
Highlighting the weekend was
Abhi Ramireddy &
Phuc Huynh, who won the No. 1 doubles draw. The duo won their first match against Eastern Illinois 6-3, before defeating NIU 6-4 in the semifinals. In the finals, Ramireddy/Huynh were victorious again over Depaul in convincing fashion by a score of 6-1.
Huynh also saw similar success in the singles draw, where he also won first-place. He also defeated opponents from Illinois State (7-6, 6-3), Northern Illinois (6-0, 4-6, (6), and then fellow teammate Ramireddy in the championship match 7-5, 6-4.
Jared Phillips earned a third-place finish in the No. 2 singles draw, defeating EIU in the first round and then SLU in the third-place match by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Pato Garcia Muriel won the back draw of the No. 3 singles draw, earning wins over Illinois-Chicago and SLU.
First-year
Colin Scruggs advanced all the way to the the finals of the No. 4 singles draw before falling in a tiebreaker to Illinois State, and
John Fakouri and
Scott Yamamoto each won the consolation draws of the No. 5 and 6 singles flights, respectively.
In the No. 3 doubles draw, Garcia Muriel and Scruggs took down NIU in the back draw finals, pulling out a 7-6 (5) match victory.
WashU will next get set for a big weekend in St. Louis at Tao Tennis Center and Dwight Davis Tennis Center as they host the ITA Regionals from September 23-25.
