Doyle Has Career Day as No. 8 Bears Defeat Carnegie in OT

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team defeated Carnegie Mellon in a 65-63 overtime thriller on Monday night.

The Bears are now 16-3 overall with a 6-2 mark in the UAA.

Carnegie Mellon won the tip and went on to score the first five points behind a layup from Sean Oberman and a 3-pointer from Josh Berry.

First-year Hayden Doyle quickly got the Bears on the board with a shot from distance, and senior Charlie Jacob knotted the score at five apiece with a pair of free throws.

The Tartans scored five unanswered points to go up 10-5 but the Bears answered with a 7-0 run of their own to take a slight 12-10 advantage. Jacob started the run from a shot behind the arc. Senior Justin netted a jumper and Jacob added two more free throws.

With just under eight minutes left in the first half, WashU started to gain some traction and build a lead, starting with a jumper and a 3-pointer from Hardy. First-year Jake Wolf put in a jumper and junior Matt Gonzalo drained a 3-pointer, putting the Bears up 24-19 with 5:23 left on the clock.

Gonzalo's 3-pointer started what would turn into an 11-0 run for WashU. Doyle and Hardy put in back-to-back layups, followed by a free throw from senior Kameron Mack. Doyle then drilled a shot from distance, giving the Bears a 32-19 edge with 1:24 remaining in the first half.

Carnegie's Charlie Tripp hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left on the clock to send WashU into halftime with a 10-point, 32-22 advantage.

The Tartans came out of the break to score the first eight points of the second half, behind buckets from Kevin Sax and R.J. Holmes. Two-straight 3-pointers from senior David Windley and Gonzalo ended Carnegie's run and put the Bears back up by 10 points, 38-28, with 14:39 left in regulation.

The Tartans started to close the gap at the 12:22 mark, as Oberman hit a 3-pointer. Sax hit the front end of a pair of free throws and Jack Stone netted a 3-pointer, cutting WashU's lead to 44-39 with 10:07 on the clock, prompting a Bears' timeout.

Out of the timeout, Carnegie outscored WashU 6-2 to pull within one point, 46-45.

Windley extended WashU's lead to five with a 3-pointer at 6:29, and Doyle followed up with a layup to give the Bears a 52-45 edge with 4:37 on the clock.

Carnegie's Oberman started a 7-0 run for the Tartans and a Holmes' layup with 2:24 on the clock tied things up at 52-52.

The ensuing minutes proved to be a nail-biter. Doyle hit a 3-pointer at 2:02 and put the Bears up 55-52 until Oberman drilled another 3-pointer for Carnegie with just under a minute left in regulation.

Doyle netted a jumper with 21 seconds remaining and Berry tied things up, 57-57, with four seconds on the clock. The Bears attempted a last-second 3-pointer for the win but it fell short, forcing overtime.

Overtime started like regulation ended, with the teams exchanging buckets and the lead.

With 1:24 remaining the overtime and down a point, Doyle hit a jumper to give the Bears a 64-63 advantage. Hardy then hit the backend of a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game and Carnegie missed the buzzer attempt, giving WashU the win.

WashU was paced by a career-high 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting from Doyle. His previous career high was 17 points. Doyle also pulled down five rebounds, recorded two steals and dished out an assist.

Jacob had his fourth double-digit scoring game in a row with 13 points, a team-high seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Hardy also finished in double-figures with 11 points and four rebounds.

Three players reached double-digits for Carnegie, led by Oberman with 15 points.

WashU is back in action next weekend with a Friday evening game against Emory and a Sunday afternoon game against Rochester.
