Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – Three players reached double-figures as the No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team defeated No. 23 Case Western Reserve University, 76-68, on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears are now 15-3 overall with a 5-2 UAA mark.
Senior Justin Hardy – who tied his career-high of 28 points – opened the game scoring the first 10 points for the Bears to give them a 10-4 edge.
Hardy's first jumper of the game evened things up, 2-2, just 30 seconds in. In the span of 50 seconds, Hardy hit back-to-back 3-pointers and finished off the run with a fastbreak jumper.
Buckets from junior Matt Gonzalo and senior Charlie Jacob, followed by free throws from Hardy pushed WashU's advantage to 16-8 with 12:22 on the clock.
With 11:07 remaining, senior Kameron Mack stole the ball and threw down a dunk, boosting the Bears' edge to 18-8 and forcing Case to call a timeout.
A pair of free throws from Case's Mitch Prendergast and a 3-pointer from Ryan Newton closed WashU's advantage to 23-18 with 7:44 remaining on the clock.
Following a quick layup from Gonzalo, the Spartans went on a 9-0 run to tie things up, 27-27. Cole Frilling, Griffin Kornaker and Newton put in layups and Kornaker fired off a shot from distance to even the score with just over four minutes left in the first half.
WashU grabbed a slight 30-27 lead following a free throw from Jabari Chiphe and another layup from Hardy before Kornaker put in another 3-pointer to tie the game at 30 apiece.
The Spartans then went on a 5-0 run, starting with a Luke Thorburn 3-pointer and followed by a pair of free throws from Hunter Drenth.
As the clock ticked down, Jacob hit a jumper and Hardy added a layup to pull the Bears within one point. A pair of free throws from Jacob gave the Bears a slight 36-35 edge with 36 seconds left.
Prendergast ended the half with a jumper, sending WashU into halftime trailing 37-36.
The Bears came out of the break to go on a 6-0 run, started by a layup from Hardy. Jacob followed with a jumper and Hardy and senior David Windley each netted a free throw.
After WashU went up 47-41 following a 3-pointer from first-year Hayden Doyle and a jumper from Gonzalo, the Spartans closed the gap to 47-46 with 14:36 on the clock. Prendergast hit a jumper and Newton drained a 3-pointer for Case.
A 3-pointer from Gonzalo nine seconds later pushed WashU's advantage to four points and a layup from Chiphe bumped that lead to 52-46 with 13:14 remaining.
Following a Newton 3-pointer for Case, Hardy put in a jumper, was fouled, and closed out the and-one play with a made free throw.
Midway through the second half, Case's Robert Faller hit a jumper to pull the Spartans within four points, 57-53.
A 3-pointer from Gonzalo and four points from Jacob gave the Bears a 64-55 edge with just over seven minutes to play in regulation. A 3-pointer from Hardy at the 6:35 mark pushed WashU's lead to double-digits, 67-57.
With just under three minutes left on the clock, the Spartans made a surge, going on a 7-0 run to pull within three points. Kornaker hit a pair of free throws and Newton added a layup before Prendergast drilled a 3-pointer, cutting WashU's lead to 69-66.
In the final 1:06, the Bears went 5-for-6 from the line to hold on to the 76-68 win, snapping a two-game losing streak.
In addition to tying his career-high 28 points, Hardy finished with seven rebounds, an assist and a block.
Jacob also tied his career-high 16 points, while pulling down four rebounds. Gonzalo rounded out the trio of double-figure scorers with a career-high 12 points.
For Case, Newton led with 15 points, while Prendergast had 13 and Kornaker and Brian Hines each had 10.
WashU is back at home on Monday with a 5:30 p.m. game against Carnegie Mellon.
