Box Score Chicago, Ill. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team rolled past the University of Chicago, 71-46, on Thursday evening.
The Bears are now 17-7 on the season with a 7-6 mark in the UAA as they head into the final weekend of regular-season play.
WashU dominated from the start, outscoring UChicago 28-4 in the first 13 minutes of action.
The Bears' defense did not allow a point from UChicago in the opening minutes, as WashU went on a 9-0 run led by four points from junior Kevin Davet. The Maroons put up their first points at the 14:34 mark.
Back-to-back layups from Davet and graduate student Jack Nolan gave WashU its first double-digit lead, 13-2, with 13:40 left in the first half. A 3-pointer from senior Charlie Jacob and a layup from first-year Jake Wolf prompted a UChicago timeout with just over 11 minutes left on the clock.
The Bears, however, scored the first six points out of the timeout before Chicago put two more on the board, giving the Bears a 24-4 edge with just over eight minutes left.
With WashU up 28-4, UChicago put together a small 6-0 run to cut into that lead, 28-10. Two more buckets from the Maroons prompted a timeout by the Bears.
In the final two minutes of the first half, the Bears outscored UChicago 5-2, all scored by Jacob, to head into halftime with a 38-18 lead.
The Bears opened the second half on a 6-0 run, led by four points from Nolan, to take a 42-18 lead.
At the 17:13 mark, UChicago went on its longest run of the game at that point, outscoring WashU 7-0, cutting the advantage down to 44-27. The Bears, however went on a 6-0 run to go up 50-27.
A 3-pointer from junior Matt Gonzalo gave the Bears a 22-point, 55-33, edge midway through the second half and a 3-pointer from Nolan two minutes later extended that to 58-33.
The Bears were solid on both sides of the ball for the rest of the game, never letting the Maroons come closer than 20 points at a time, and squelching any runs that UChicago would go on.
A 3-pointer from sophomore Jabari Chiphe with 1:12 left put the icing on the cake for the Bears, boosting them to the 71-46 win.
WashU shot 29-for-63 (46%) from the floor, 9-for-23 (39.1%) from 3-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The Bears outrebounded the Maroons 44-35.
Three players reached double-figures for the Bears, led by 18 points, five rebounds and two blocks from Davet. Jacob recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Nolan added 15 points, four rebounds and two steals. First-year Drake Kindsvater had eight points, six rebounds and a career-high five steals in his second-career start.
Bryce Hopkins led UChicago with 12 points and five rebounds.
WashU closes out the regular-season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home game against Chicago. The game will be senior day, honoring Nolan, Jacob, Justin Hardy, Kameron Mack, David Windley and 2021 graduate Payden Webb.
