Box Score Brooklyn, N.Y. – The No. 17 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team fell to NYU, 68-62, on Friday night at St. Francis College Brooklyn. The Bears are now 16-4 overall with a 6-5 mark in the UAA.
NYU opened up on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes, before graduate student Jack Nolan put the Bears on the board with a jumper.
The Violets put up another five points in the next minute to take a 12-2 lead with 17:16 left on the clock. NYU built up an 18-5 lead with 12:07 remaining.
Things started to click for the Bears midway through the first half, as they went on a 16-0 run to take a 23-20 lead over NYU.
First-year Hayden Doyle started the run with a jumper. Senior Charlie Jacob then stole the ball and laid it in and followed that up with another jumper. Junior Kevin Davet scored on an offensive putback before Nolan drilled a shot from 3-point range. Another 3-pointer from junior Matt Gonzalo at the 6:43 mark put the Bears up 21-20, their first lead of the game. Davet closed out the run with a pair of free throws.
An NYU bucket and a 3-pointer pushed the Violets ahead, 25-23 with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. Jacob quickly took the lead back with a 3-pointer with 1:30 left on the clock.
The Bears closed out the first half on a 6-2 run, behind 3-pointers from sophomore Drake Kindsvater and Nolan, to take a 32-29 lead at the half.
In the first five minutes of the second half, NYU opened on a 9-6 run.
Davet put in back-to-back layups to give the Bears a 36-30 edge before the Violets went on to tie the game up, 38-38, on a Nikola Lipovic 3-pointer at 14:37.
After the teams exchanged baskets for the next few minutes, a free throw and layup from Davet and a jumper from Nolan put the Bears up 48-45.
From there, the Violets went on a 10-0 run to take a 55-48 advantage with 6:26 on the clock, prompting WashU to call a timeout.
Doyle netted a jumper, a layup and a free throw to cut NYU's lead to two points, 55-53, with 3:21 remaining. He then hit a pair of free throws to make the score 57-55 with 2:17 on the clock.
Following an NYU timeout, the Violets scored five-straight to take a 62-55 lead over the Bears. In the final 15 seconds, Kindsvater hit a pair of free throws and Jacob grabbed a defensive rebound to go the length of the floor for a layup, cutting NYU's lead to 65-61 with nine seconds left.
The Violets held off any further Bear surges, coming away with a 68-62 win.
The Bears shot 23-for-51 (45.1%) from the floor, 5-for-17 (29.4%) from 3-point range and 11-for-17 (64.7%) from the free throw line.
Davet led with 14 points, six rebounds and one block. Nolan, in his first game back from an injury, netted 13 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded two steals. Jacob also had 13 points for his seventh game in a row in double-figures, to go with seven rebounds. Doyle also reached double-digits with 10 points.
NYU's Bobby Hawkinson finished with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds and Zay Freeney also had 17 points.
WashU looks to bounce back on Sunday with a 12 p.m. (ET) game at Brandeis.
