Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team fell to Rochester, 72-71, on a buzzer-beater on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears are now 16-5 overall with a 6-4 mark in the UAA.
With nine seconds left in regulation, junior Matt Gonzalo netted a corner 3-pointer to give the Bears a 71-69 lead. WashU then forced a Rochester turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, and junior Kevin Davet was fouled. Davet missed both free throws, setting up a two-point game.
The Yellowjackets took a timeout with six seconds remaining to draw up a play, and at the buzzer, Trent Noordsij hit a corner 3-pointer to give Rochester the win.
In the opening minutes of the game, the teams exchanged baskets and at the 12:39 mark, the Bears started to create some distance.
First-year Hayden Doyle and sophomore Tyler Carlson hit back-to-back 3-pointers, giving WashU a 14-8 advantage with 11:49 left.
The Yellowjackets, however, followed up with two-straight 3-pointers to tie things up at 14 apiece. From there, Rochester's Ross Gang hit a 3-pointer and Logan Jagodzinski put in a jumper to take a 19-14 edge, forcing a WashU timeout.
The Bears trailed for the next few minutes, but kept things close.
Trailing 29-23 with 3:32 remaining, senior Charlie Jacob hit a jumper to pull within four points. Davet followed up with a pair of free throws to close Rochester's lead to 29-27. A 3-pointer from Jacob with just under two minutes remaining made it a one-point, 33-32 game.
Rochester closed out the first half on an 8-0 run to lead 41-32 at halftime.
WashU opened the second half with an 11-5 run, led by four points from Jacob, to cut into Rochester's lead, 46-43.
The Yellowjackets built their lead back up to 53-45, prompting a WashU timeout.
The Bears scored five-straight points on two free throws from senior Justin Hardy and a 3-pointer from Carlson to pull within four points, 58-54. WashU ultimately took its first lead of the half with 6:14 remaining, as part of a 10- run.
Hardy drained a 3-pointer and Jacob hit a pair of free throws, followed by a jumper from Hayden Doyle to take the 63-62 lead. Doyle then hit a jumper, was fouled and converted the ensuing free throw to put the Bears up 66-62 with 4:57 on the clock.
Rochester's Gang hit a 3-pointer and Brian Amabilino Perez netted a layup, putting the Yellowjackets ahead 67-66 with 3:45 remaining.
The Bears snagged the lead again with a layup from Jake Wolf, then Rochester's Noordsij put in a bucket for the 69-68 edge with 1:18 on the clock.
Following multiple timeouts, Gonzalo hit the go-ahead 3-pointer that led to Noordsij's ultimate game-winner.
Jacob led WashU with a career-high 23 points to go with three assists and three steals. Hardy registered 13 points and six rebounds and Doyle finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
The Bears shot 24-for-53 (45%) from the floor and 10-for-26 (38.5%) from 3-point range.
Three reached double-figures for Rochester, led by Gang's 17 points.
WashU returns to action next weekend at NYU and Brandeis, looking to bounce back from a two-game losing streak.
