Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team fell to No. 18 Emory on Friday night, 67-57.
The Eagles went on a 6-0 run in the first two minutes before senior David Windley hit a 3-pointer to put the Bears on the board.
WashU trailed the Eagles until 11:31 left in the first half. Senior Justin Hardy hit a layup to tie things up, 14-14. The Bears took their first lead of the game two minutes later when senior Charlie Jacob hit a 3-pointer to go up 17-16.
Emory quickly tied it and took back the lead briefly, until first-year Hayden Doyle drilled a shot from distance, giving the Bears a 20-18 advantage with 8:52 on the clock.
Back-to-back 3-pointers for the Eagles resulted in a 24-20 lead, but Hardy answered with his own shot from behind the arc to pull WashU back within one point, 24-23, at 6:48.
Emory's Nick Stuck hit a 3-pointer for the Eagles to go up 27-23. Following a WashU timeout, senior Kameron Mack drilled a 3-pointer at 4:25 to once again bring the Bears within one, 27-26.
Junior Kevin Davet gave WashU the 28-27 lead with 2:35 remaining in the first half. Jacob followed that up with an and-one play, hitting a layup and the ensuing free throw after being fouled, putting the Bears up 31-27.
Emory's Matthew Schner and Albert Fallas each hit a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 33-31 lead with under a minute left, but Doyle drilled a 3-pointer with 28 seconds on the clock to send the Bears into halftime with a slight 34-33 advantage.
The Eagles came out to score the first points of the second half, as Schner hit a 3-pointer for a 36-34 lead.
Doyle netted a 3-pointer to take the lead back and the game would be tied twice in the next two minutes.
At 16:02, Jacob hit a pair of free throws to tie things up and then give the Bears a 41-40 edge. Jacob followed that up with a jumper and junior Matt Gonzalo put in a layup to extend WashU's lead to 45-40, its largest of the game at that point.
An and-one play from Wolf extended the Bears lead to 48-42 with just under 14 minutes left.
The Eagles, however, would go on a 10-0 over the next two minutes, taking a 52-48 lead with 11:21 remaining.
Davet hit a 3-pointer with 8:17 left to cut Emory's lead to just one point but the Eagles scored four-straight to go back up, 56-51.
Doyle put in a layup with just over six minutes left, closing Emory's lead to 56-53, but that was the closest the Bears would come for the remainder of the game, leading to the Eagles' double-digit win.
Doyle led the Bears with 17 points to go with four rebounds and two assists. Jacob reached double-digits for the fifth-straight game, netting 12 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Davet finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Three players for the Eagles reached double-figures, led by Schner's 20 points and nine rebounds.
WashU looks to bounce back on Sunday with a 12 p.m. game against Rochester.
