About the Lopata Classic
The Lopata Classic is made possible by a gift from the late Stanley Lopata, a Washington University in St. Louis alumnus and emeritus trustee, and his late wife, Lucy. President of Lopata Research and Development Corporation, Stanley founded and was chairman emeritus of the St. Louis-based Carboline Corporation. He also was past president of the William Greenleaf Eliot Society and recipient of the Society's "Search" Award. Active and dedicated supporters of Washington University, Stanley and Lucy sponsored student scholarships in addition to the Lopata Basketball Classic. They endowed a professorship in chemical engineering and were major benefactors to the construction of several buildings. The Village Housing complex was completed in the fall of 2001, and one of the four buildings was dedicated as the Lucy and Stanley Lopata House. A key leader of the alliance for Washington University, Stanley received an Alliance Achievement Award in 1987, and he is a past recipient of the university's Distinguished Alumni Award and the School of Engineering & Applied Science Alumni Achievement Award. In the fall of 1992, Stanley and Lucy were inducted into Washington University's Sports Hall of Fame in the distinguished service category. Stanley passed away at the age of 85 on Jan. 19, 2000, while Lucy passed away May 24, 2013, at the age of 98.
