Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team had its winning streak snapped by Carnegie Mellon on Friday evening, as the Tartans defeated the Bears 71-68 in overtime.
The Bears are now 14-2 overall with a 4-1 mark in the UAA.
WashU trailed nearly the entire game, taking its first lead with just 3:33 left in regulation.
Carnegie opened up the game on a 7-2 run – with the Bears' lone bucket during that stretch coming from first-year Hayden Doyle – before WashU called a timeout.
Graduate student Jack Nolan tied things up at the 16:25 mark, 7-7, with a jumper, but the Tartans quickly regained the lead with a Josh Berry 3-pointer.
Following a Drake Kindsvater dunk with 14:37 on the clock to cut into Carnegie's lead, 10-9, the Tartans went on a 7-0 run to take a 17-9 advantage midway through the first half.
The Bears struggled to put together a multi-basket run, as the two teams would go on to exchange baskets for much of the remainder of the half.
In the final two minutes of the first half, Kindsvater threw down his second dunk of the game and put in a layup, closing the Carnegie lead to 29-24 with 31 seconds remaining.
Carnegie's RJ Holmes closed out the half with a pair of free throws to send the Bears into halftime trailing 31-24.
Back-to-back buckets from Holmes in the opening minutes of the second half gave the Tartans their first double-digit lead of the game, 37-26, which was added to by a pair of free throws from Jack Stone.
With 13:36 left in regulation, junior Matt Gonzalo hit a jumper and Nolan followed with a 3-pointer to cut into the lead, 41-33.
Four minutes later at the 9:21 mark, the Bears closed that lead down to just six points, 46-40, following a layup from senior David Windley and a 3-pointer from Kindsvater.
With 7:41 on the clock, a pair of free throws from Doyle started what was ultimately a 6-0 run for the Bears. Senior Charlie Jacob hit a jumper and Nolan followed that with two free throws, bringing the Bears within two points, 48-46, with 6:40 left in regulation.
With 3:55 on the clock, Doyle drilled a shot from behind the arc to cut the Carnegie lead to 52-51. Following a time out, Jacob netted a pair of free throws to give the Bears their first lead of the night, 53-52.
The Tartans briefly took the lead back, but with just over two minutes left on the clock, Doyle hit a jumper to start a 4-0 run for the Bears. He followed that with another jumper at the 54 second mark, pushing WashU ahead 57-56.
Carnegie ultimately tied things up with 38 seconds left as Sean Oberman hit the front end of a pair of free throws. Despite WashU's best efforts to win in regulation, the game moved forward into overtime.
The teams exchanged baskets in the opening minutes of overtime, tying things up at 59 apiece.
Senior Justin Hardy scored his first points of the night with a big 3-pointer with 3:56 on the clock to give WashU a 62-59 edge.
A jumper from Carnegie's Stone and two free throws from Berry gave the Tartans the 63-62 lead with two minutes left. After exchanging baskets again, a pair of free throws from Nolan put WashU up 68-67 with 45 seconds remaining.
Oberman hit a layup for the Tartans and followed a failed offensive attempt for the Bears, Berry sealed the deal for Carnegie with two free throws. Nolan put up a buzzer 3-pointer for the win, but it fell short.
Four different Bears reached double-figures against the Tartans, led by Nolan with 22 points. Nolan moved up to the No. 4 spot on the all-time scoring list.
Doyle finished with a career-high 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Both Jacob and Kindsvater netted 10 points each, which was a career-high for Kindsvater.
The Bears look to get back on track on Sunday with a game at Case at 12 p.m. EST.
