No. 4 Men's Basketball Defeats Brandeis for 13th Win in a Row

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team continued to roll, defeating Brandeis 67-53 on Sunday for its 13th win in a row. The Bears are now 14-1 overall and 4-0 in UAA play.

The last time the Bears won 13 or more games in a row was during the 2017-18 season, when they went on a 14-game streak.

WashU came out hot, outscoring Brandeis 11-3 in the first five minutes of action. In the first four minutes, there were four 3-pointers between both teams, starting with back-to-back threes from senior Charlie Jacob and graduate student Jack Nolan.

Following a shot from distance by Brandeis' Tommy Eastman, senior Justin Hardy drained a 3-pointer, forcing the Judges' to call a time out at the 16:13 mark.

A layup from Brandeis' David Perez pulled the Judges' within four points, 16-12, with 11:25 left, but a layup from senior David Windley and a jumper from Nolan quickly doubled that gap.

With just under seven minutes left in the first half, a pair of free throws from Windley gave the Bears a 24-15 edge over Brandeis.

The Judges' Terrell Brown put in two free throws and Toby Harris drained a 3-pointer to cut WashU's lead down to 24-20 with just over five minutes on the clock

The Bears went on to score the next four points on a jumper from Nolan and two free throws from Hardy to keep a slight 28-20 edge.

With 43 seconds remaining in the first half, Nolan drilled a 3-pointer to stretch the Bears lead to 35-26 before Brandies closed out the first half with a four-point play from Collin Sawyer. Sawyer hit his 3-pointer, was fouled and converted the free throw to send the Bears into halftime with a 35-30 lead.

Sawyer opened the second half how he closed out the first half, with a 3-pointer for the Judges to cut the Bears' lead down to just two points, 35-33.

WashU went on a quick 6-0 run to take a 43-35 lead with 13:50 on the clock, starting with a jumper from first-year Hayden Doyle. Nolan hit a pair of free throws and Doyle put in another bucket to close out the run and force a Brandeis time out.

At 12:03, the Bears started an 8-0 run that would boost their advantage to 53-39.

Junior Kevin Davet hit back-to-back layups for the Bears. On the second shot, he was fouled and converted the free throw for a three-point play. Hardy then added his own three-point play with a layup and the ensuing free throw.

Brandeis' Eastman put in a layup for the Judges before the Bears went on another 9-0 run to go up 60-39 with just over five minutes left in the game.

Hardy started things off with a layup and Nolan followed that up with back-to-back jumpers. Windley then drilled a 3-pointer to close out the run.

With just under four minutes on the clock, Hardy put in a layup and Nolan hit a shot from distance to push the Bears' to a 67-47 edge.

Brandeis would go on to score the final six points of the game but the WashU walked away with the 67-53 victory.

As a team, WashU shot 23-for-53 and outrebounded Brandeis 40-29.

Nolan led all scorers with 25 points, for his fourth-straight 25+ point game. He also grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists. Nolan is now fifth on the all-time scoring lists with 1,541 career points.

Hardy recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds as well as two assists.

Doyle finished with eight points, six rebounds and two assists while Windley had seven points, four rebounds, a steal and a block.

For Brandeis, Sawyer led with 17 points while Eastman had eight points and four rebounds.

The Bears hit the road next weekend with games at Carnegie Mellon on Friday evening at 5:30 ET and Case Western Reserve on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. ET.
