Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team rolled past NYU on Friday evening in UAA action, toppling the Violets, 97-61.
The Bears are currently riding a 12-game winning streak, sitting at 13-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
WashU was led by graduate student Jack Nolan, who scored 29 points for the third-straight game. With that, he surpassed his uncle, Gene Nolan, and Chris Alexander to move up to sixth all-time for scoring.
After NYU took a slight 3-2 lead to open the game, the Bears went on a 12-0 run, building a 14-3 advantage at the 12:17 mark.
Nolan opened the run with a jumper and senior Justin Hardy followed with a 3-pointer. First-year Hayden Doyle laid one in and Hardy hit a jumper before senior David Windley drained a shot from behind the arc.
Five-straight points from Nolan pushed the Bears ahead 19-5 midway through the first half and senior Kameron Mack added another two points for WashU.
NYU put together several short runs, eventually cutting into WashU's lead, 25-18, at 7:17. The Bears, however, scored five-straight stretch their lead back to double-digits with just over six minutes left in the first half.
Nolan and junior Matt Gonzalo drilled back-to-back 3-pointers for a 36-21 WashU lead. Nolan and Gonzalo each added another bucket before NYU closed out the half with the final four points to send the Bears into halftime with a 40-27 lead.
After the Violets closed WashU's lead to 44-34 in the opening minutes of the second half, the Bears went on a 14-0 run.
Nolan opened the run with a jumper and first-year Jake Wolf followed with a steal and a 3-pointer. Hardy put in a layup before Doyle added back-to-back buckets. Nolan closed out the run with a shot from distance, giving WashU a 58-34 lead with 14:40 on the clock.
NYU's Zay Freeney scored an and-one play for the Violets, but they could not gain momentum for a run. As one of the top defensive teams in the country, the Bears were able to squelch any runs for the remainder of the game.
The largest run NYU was able to put together in the final 15 minutes of the game was four points. Jacob Sussman hit a 3-pointer at the 10:26 mark and Hayden Peek scored the front end of a one-and-one.
With 6:36 left on the clock, junior Kevin Davet grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the putback. On the next play, he stole the ball and ultimately scored again with just under six minutes left.
In the final four minutes of play, the Bears reserves were able to show off their offensive prowess.
First-year Drake Kindsvater put in a back-to-back layups, followed by a 3-pointer from sophomore Tyler Carlson. Kindsvater added two more layups and first-year Kyle Beedon put one in from behind the arc. Carlson scored the final points of the game for the Bears on a layup with 21 seconds left.
As a team, WashU outrebounded NYU 37-23 and forced 11 Violets' turnovers.
In addition to Nolan's 29 points, Hardy finished with nine points, a team-high seven rebounds and two assists. Davet, Doyle, Gonzalo and Kindsvater each had eight points while Windley netted seven.
For NYU, Sussman and Freeny both had 15 points. The Bears held leading scoring Bobby Hawkinson, who is currently averaging a double-double, to just six points and seven rebounds. It marks just the second game of his season that he has not reached double figures in scoring.
The Bears look to extend its winning streak when they welcome UAA opponent Brandeis on Sunday for a 12 p.m. game.
