Box Score Rochester, N.Y. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team kept its winning streak rolling on Sunday, after collecting its 11th win in a row with a 70-61 victory at Rochester in UAA play. The win marks head coach Pat Juckem's 250th career win.
WashU moves to 12-1 (2-0, UAA) on the season, earning its third consecutive victory over Rochester, while the Yellowjackets drop to 9-4 (1-2, UAA).
The Bears' suffocating defense was on full display again on Sunday, holding UR to 18 percent from three-point range and forcing 19 turnovers. WashU currently holds the top scoring defense in the nation (55.8 PPG).
In addition, WashU scored 21 points off turnovers in the victory and finished with 20 points scored in the paint.
WashU's largest lead of the afternoon was 18 at 57-39, but the Bears would have to hold off a late rally from Rochester in the second half, who cut the lead down to six points at three different times in the final three minutes.
WU clinched the victory with solid shooting at the foul line, knocking down 8-10 free throws in the final 41 seconds of action.
Three Bears finished in double figures scoring with Jack Nolan, who leads the UAA in scoring at 21. 8 points per contest, leading all scorers with his second straight 29-point game.
The Downers Grove, Ill. shot 9-18 from the floor and was 9-11 from the foul line.
Senior Charlie Jacob scored a season-best 13 points, shooting 6-6 from the free throw line and notched seven rebounds, while first-year Hayden Doyle reached double figures scoring for the fourth straight game with 11 points and a team-high five assists.
After a tight back-and-forth battle in the first half, which saw six different ties and nine lead changes, the Bears were in front 33-29.
WU opened the second half on a 16-6 run to take a 49-35 advantage. Nolan scored 17 points in the second half, including 11 points in the Bears' second half opening surge.
Up 12 with 10 minutes to play, the Bears continued to pour it on with an 8-2 run following back-to-back threes from Drake Kindsvater and Hayden Doyle and a pair of free throws from Nolan, which increased their lead out to 18.
Over the next three minutes, the Yellowjackets' 9-0 run brought the lead down to 57-48, but David Windley's three from the right corner with under four minutes to play pushed WU back up by 12.
Jacob, Nolan, Justin Hardy, and Windley, would sink eight free throws combined in the final minute to seal the deal.
Hardy and Windley each finished with seven points apiece in the win.
Rochester was led in scoring by Brian Amabilino Perez with 17 points.
The Bears will next return to St. Louis and will host NYU at the Field House on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
