Box Score Atlanta, Ga. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team defeated Emory, 72-61, in its UAA opener on Friday evening.
The Bears are riding a 10-game winning streak and are now 11-1 on the year with a 1-0 mark in conference play.
It was a slow offensive start for both teams, as it took over four minutes for any points to be put on the board.
Graduate student Jack Nolan broke the scoring drought at 15:43 with a shot from behind the hard. Nolan went on to score the first eight points of the game with a jumper and another 3-pointer to put WashU up 8-0 with 12:40 left on the clock.
Romin Williams put Emory on the board with a jumper but the Bears went on to score the next eight points to take a 16-2 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. First-year Jake Wolf put in a jumper, followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Matt Gonzalo and David Windley.
Jumpers from Charlie Jacob and Nolan gave the Bears a 22-7 lead with 6:48 on the clock, prompting an Emory timeout. The Eagles then went on a 5-0 run to close WashU's lead to single digits, 25-17. Emory would go on to cut the lead down to just six points with 57 on the clock.
Nolan scored the final five points of the half for the Bears, converted an and-pone play and hitting a jumper at the buzzer.
Following the break, Emory came out to score the first four points of the half, cutting WashU's lead to 32-27. A Matthew Schner jumper closed the lead to just four points before the Bears went on a 7-0 run.
Nolan started the run with a shot from behind the arc, followed by a jumper from Wolf. Nolan hit a pair of free throws to close out the run and five the Bears a 43-32 advantage with 14:59 on the clock.
Over the span of two minutes, Emory outscored WashU 8-3 and cut into the Bears' lead, 49-42. Following a WashU timeout, Jacob and first-year Hayden Doyle each put in layups to give WashU a double-digit lead once again.
Emory's Cale Martens added a layup and Nick Stuck drained a 3-pointer, closing WashU's lead to 59-52 with 4:06 left in regulation.
The Bears called a time out and came out to score the next six points on free throws from Nolan and Doyle.
With two minutes left, senior Kameron Mack slammed it home to extend WashU's lead to 67-54, followed by a pair of free throws from Doyle.
WashU went on to hold off any further Emory runs en route to the 72-59 win.
Nolan led all scorers with a season-high 29 points and career-high 11 rebounds. Doyle finished with 16 points, six rebounds, two blocks and a team-high three assists while Jacob scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Emory was led by Schner with 20 points and eight rebounds.
