Dominant Second Quarter Pushes Women's Hoops Past Greenville

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team started off the new year on the right note with an 81-67 victory over Greenville on Saturday at the Field House. 

WashU has won six of its past seven contests and improves to 6-5 on the season and 5-0 at the Field House. 

It was a career afternoon for Jessica Brooks, who notched 23 points on 11-17 shooting to lead all scorers. 

In addition, Brooks collected eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. 

After a slow start in the first quarter, the Bears turned on the gas offensively in the second period and outscored Greenville 31-16. 

Trailing 22-18, WashU would outscore the Panthers 30-13 in the final eight minutes of the first half, as their impressive run included a streak of 11-12 shooting, with six consecutive made field goals, pushing the Bears ahead 48-35 at the break. 

WashU shot lights out from the field at 68 percent and were 6-7 from three-point territory in the quarter. 

First-year Sabrina DelBello could not miss as she scored 11 points in the quarter on 4-4 shooting, including 3-3 from behind the arc. 

WashU would remain ahead by double-digits the entire second half and their defense continued to make it difficult for GU to score, forcing 17 turnovers on the afternoon. 

Leading 58-45 midway through the quarter, the Bears strung together a quick 8-0 run for their largest advantage of the day at 21 points (66-45) to put the game out of reach. 

Statistically, the Bears held Greenville to under 40 percent shooting and also finished the contest with 46 points in the paint, 22 fastbreak points, and 20 second chance points. 

Along with Brooks' impressive day, three other Bears finished in double figures scoring. 

Samantha Weaver finished with 13 points on 6-11 shooting and added nine rebounds. Weaver has reached double figures scoring four times this season. 

Sammi Matoush posted 12 points, marking her third consecutive game played with at least 11 points scored. 

DelBello collected her second straight game in double figures scoring with 11 points, while Brenna Loftus totaled seven. Karissa Grandison dished out a team-high four assists 

The Bears will next look to begin UAA play on January 8 at Chicago. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. CST.
