Men's Tennis Advances to Final Four

Chattanooga, Tenn., May 24, 2021 — The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team defeated George Fox 5-0 Monday afternoon in the NCAA Division III Men's Quarterfinal to advance to tomorrow's Final Four.

This marks the program's eighth Final Four appearance, its first since 2015, and will guarantee WashU (14-1) a top-five finish for the 13th-consecutive season.

The Bears swept doubles and picked up singles points from senior Daniel Li and first year Gaurav Singh to close out the Bruins, who finish the season at 12-5.

Graduate student Scott Altmeyer and sophomore Abhi Ramireddy won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles while seniors Li and Benjamin van der Sman won 8-3 at No. 2, and senior Ethan Hillis and Singh won 8-2 at No. 3.  Singh was the first singles player to finish, closing out a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 followed by Li with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. Hillis (No. 1), Altmeyer (No. 2) and van der Sman (No. 3) all held 1-0 set advantages as the match ended.

WashU will play fellow University Athletic Association member Case Western Reserve tomorrow (Tuesday, May 25) at 1 p.m. CST in the semifinal. The Spartans (13-2) defeated Trinity (Texas) 5-1 to punch their Final Four ticket. 

The Final Four features three teams out of the UAA as Emory (8-3) advanced to the semifinal with a 5-0 win over Brandeis while Johns Hopkins (11-0), rounds out the field after defeating Williams 5-4. The National Championship match is set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. CST.
