No. 11 WashU Men's Tennis Sweeps North Central In Saturday Action

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Back home after two weeks away, the No. 11 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team got through some cool, breezy conditions to sweep visiting North Central on Saturday at the Tao Tennis Center.

WashU got things started quickly by claiming the doubles point. Senior Colin Scruggs and first-year Ethan Wu put the Bears up 1-0 within the best-of-three doubles point with their 6-2 win at number three.

Senior Colin Fox and first-year Jeremy Sieben clinched the point with a 6-3 win at number one before junior Nathan Tam and sophomore Drew Koval completed the doubles sweep, 6-3, at number two.

Sophomore Avi Mahajan did not waste any time and put WashU up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at number four singles. Fox was the next to finish with a 6-4, 6-1 win at number three singles.

Scruggs clinched the match for WashU with his 6-3, 6-3 win at the top spot.

Leading 4-0, Tam continued the momentum for the Bears with a 6-3, 7-6 win at number five.

Sieben was the next to finish at number two. After winning the first set 6-4, he dropped the second set 7-5. With the match decided, Sieben played a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a full third set. He was able to secure his win by claiming the match tiebreak.

In the final match on the court, junior Daniel Radke won his first set in a tiebreaker before dropping his second set 6-4. Playing a match tiebreak of his own, Radke was down by as many as three more than halfway through it.

However, he would go up late, 12-11, before his opponent mishit a forehand long that allowed Radke to complete the match sweep for the Bears.

WashU will play its final home match of the regular season on Monday, Apr. 20, when it welcomes Div. II McKendree to the Tao Tennis Center for a 4 p.m. match. Prior to the contest, WashU will honor its senior class for their dedication to the program over the past four seasons.
