FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – In a rematch from their Spring Break trip, the No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team faced off against No. 12 Swarthmore in the third-place match of the UMW Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, unlike the 4-3 win back in March, WashU dropped a 4-1 match to the Garnet.
WashU had gotten things started quickly in doubles against Swarthmore. After the Garnet picked up a win at number three, senior
Colin Scruggs and first-year
Jeremy Sieben leveled the doubles matches at 1-1 with a 6-3 win at the top spot.
It was then junior
Nathan Tam and sophomore
Drew Koval who clinched the doubles point for the Bears with a 7-6 win at number two.
However, Swarthmore would come back in singles claiming wins at numbers 1, 2, 5, and 6 in straight sets to come from behind for the win.
Koval was up a set, 7-5 when the match ended while classmate
Avi Mahajan was up a set, 6-4, and down in the second, 2-3, when the match was abandoned.
WashU returns home next weekend when it hosts North Central at the Tao Tennis Courts on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 2:30 p.m. The Bears will then close out the regular season on Monday, Apr. 20 against Div. II McKendree at home at 4 p.m. Prior to the match, WashU will honor its senior class with a special recognition ceremony.
