FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team traveled to the East Coast this weekend for the UMW Invitational, a bracket-style tournament featuring seven of the top-25 teams in the country.

WashU opened the quarterfinals with a 4-2 win against No. 17 Gustavus Adolphus before falling to No. 9 and UAA opponent Carnegie Mellon, 4-3, in the semifinals.

WashU 4, Gustavus Adolphus 2
The Bears kicked off the UMW Invitational with a win as they bested the No. 17 Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus.

WashU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point. Junior Nathan Tam and sophomore Drew Koval got things started at No. 3 doubles with a 6-1 win. Gustavus Adolphus tied it up with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles before senior Colin Fox and first-year Jeremy Sieben clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

The Bears, leading 1-0, made it a quick 2-0 with Tam's win at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

It wasn't much longer before the Gusties tied it up at 2-2 with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. After winning their opening sets, senior Colin Scruggs and sophomore Avi Mahajan each dropped their second set 6-4 at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively.

The pair then each won their third sets 6-2, with Scruggs clinching the match as the Bears picked up the win. The match at No. 5 singles saw sophomore Drew Koval leading 7-5, 5-4 when the match was abandoned.

Carnegie Mellon 4, WashU 3
Like the first match of the day, WashU took a 1-0 lead after claiming two of the three doubles matches. Fox and Sieben won again at the top spot, 6-3, before Koval and Tam clinched the point at No. 3 doubles, 6-3.

Mahajan won his second singles match of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 before the Tartans tied the match at 2-2 with wins at No. 6 and No. 3 singles in straight sets.

Sieben then put the Bears up 3-2 with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2.

However, CMU picked up a win at No. 1 and then clinched the come-from-behind victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 5 for the 4-3 final.

WashU will close out the tournament on Sunday with a rematch against No. 12 Swarthmore for third place. The match will take place at 2:30 p.m. ET. Earlier this season, WashU picked up a 4-3 win over the Garnet during the Spring Break trip in Texas.
