Murfreesboro, Tenn., May 2, 2021 — The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team picked up a 6-3 win over University Athletic Association rival Emory Sunday at the Adams Tennis Center.
The win was a significant one for the Bears (11-1) in their quest for an NCAA Regional bid. The Eagles (5-3) entered the matchup as the top-ranked team in the NCAA Atlantic South Region while the Bears are ranked second in the Central Region.
Senior Ethan Hillis had a stellar day for the Bears, picking up wins in both doubles and singles competition. The third-ranked singles player in the Central Region, Hillis teamed up with first year Gaurav Singh for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles in addition to picking up a 6-4, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles over Emory's Hayden Cassone, the top ranked singles player in the Atlantic South. Hillis remains undefeated in both singles (12-0) and doubles (11-0) for the season.
The Bears picked up their remaining four points in singles play. Graduate student Scott Altmeyer, the fifth-ranked player in the Central Region, won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 to remain undefeated in singles play at 12-0 for the season. Senior Benjamin van der Sman picked up his 50th career singles win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 while senior Daniel Li won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 and sophomore Abhi Ramireddy won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
The Bears will learn their postseason fate on the NCAA Division III men's tennis tournament selection show on Monday, May 10.
