St. Louis, Mo., March 21, 2021 — The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team defeated Maryville 7-0 Monday afternoon in what was the team's first match at the Tao Tennis Center in more than a year.
The Bears (2-1) only dropped a few games in a doubles sweep before gutting out some close matches to claim all six singles wins over the Saints (3-2).
WashU picked up a 6-2 doubles win from Scott Altmeyer and Abhi Ramireddy at No. 1, a 6-0 win from Benjamin van der Sman and Daniel Li at No. 2, and a 6-1 win from Ethan Hillis and Jeremy Ouyang at No. 3.
Hillis and Ramireddy cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles while Altmeyer won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 and van der Sman won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. Li fought back from a 6-0 loss in his opening set to win his second set 6-2 before outlasting Maryville's Juan Segura for a 10-8 win in the deciding set. Playing in his first match of the season, junior Luke Smith also came out on top of a hard-fought match 6-4, 6-4.
The Bears are back in action at the Tao Tennis Center on Thursday, April 1 with a 4 p.m. match against Webster.
