Memphis, Tenn., March 14, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team opened its season with a 4-3 road loss to Division I Memphis Sunday afternoon.
The Bears fell to 0-1 on the season while Memphis improved to 6-5.
WashU opened the day strong by winning the doubles point. Graduate student Scott Altmeyer teamed up with sophomore Abhi Ramireddy to defeat the Tigers duo of Oscar Cutting and David Stevenson 6-4 at No. 1 doubles while senior Ethan Hillis and freshman Gaurav Singh picked up a 6-4 win over Jeremy Taylor and James Story at No. 3 doubles.
Hillis and Altmeyer also picked up Bears wins in singles play as Hillis defeated Story 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 and Altmeyer topped Stevenson 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 2.
WashU is back in action with a home match against DePauw at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 20 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
