Women's Hoops Defeats UW-Superior 66-55 at 20th Annual McWilliams Classic

St. Louis, Mo., December 3, 2021—The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team opened up the 20th Annual McWilliams Classic with a 66-55 victory over UW-Superior at the Field House on Friday evening.

WashU wins its second consecutive contest and improves to 2-4 on the year as the Bears won their 2021-22 home opener in convincing fashion.

Offensive rebounds were key for WashU, as they compiled 15 throughout the victory and scored 19 points off turnovers.

The Bears shot 41 percent from the floor in the victory and outrebounded the Yellowjackets 36-21.

It was another great start for WashU in the first period, as they shot 56 percent from the field and quickly built a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes of action.

WU led 22-11 after the first period and held the Yellowjackets to 4-13 shooting and forced six turnovers.

The Bears' hot shooting cooled down in the second quarter, but WashU owned the glass, earning five offensive rebounds in the period.

WashU reamined ahead by double digits and led by as much as 13 before UW-Superior trimmed the lead down to just five at 30-25 midway through the quarter, but the Bears ended the frame on a 7-0 run to take a 37-25 lead into halftime.

In the third, the Bears allowed only nine points and extended their advantage out to 18 at 48-30 following a three from Naomi Jackson, which capped off an 11-2 run.

WashU's largest lead of the night came early in the fourth quarter after Maya Arnott scored off a layup following an offensive rebound in the paint to extend the lead to 59-40.

12 Bears reached the scoring column as WashU went to its bench for the remainder of the contest. In total, the Bears produced 26 bench points in the win.

Maya Arnott and Samantha Weaver both tallied 13 points to lead the Bears in scoring on Friday evening. Arnott also posted eight rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists, while Weaver recorded five rebounds.

Naomi Jackson finished with nine points and four rebounds and Molly Gannon added eight.

Jessica Brooks registered seven points and eight rebounds on 50 percent shooting.

WashU will matchup with Berea College tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the Bears' final game of the McWilliams Classic.
