Box Score St. Louis, Mo., December 3, 2021 – The No. 20 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team handily defeated Hendrix, 80-46, on the first day of the 37th Annual Lopata Classic on Friday.
The Bears will take on St. Thomas (Tex.) tomorrow in the Lopata Championship game. The Celts defeated Hope to earn a bid to the final.
WashU opened the game with the first four points on a layup from Kevin Davet and a jumper from Jack Nolan. The Bears stretched that to 10-2 following a 6-0 run led by Nolan with four points.
Hendrix called a timeout to regroup, but the Bears extended the lead again to 13-2 following three made free throws from Nolan after being fouled behind the arc.
Another layup from Davet pushed WashU's advantage to 19-5 before Hendrix scored six straight to pull within seven points. Layups from Kameron Mack and Jake Wolf brought the lead back to double-digits with 6:34 left in the first half.
The Bears and Hendrix traded baskets for the next few minutes but it was WashU that closed out the first half on a 7-0 run. Drake Kindsvater started with a jumper and Justin Hardy drilled a 3-pointer. Nolan hit a jumper with 39 seconds left to give the Bears a 41-23 lead heading into the break.
WashU started the second half how it closed the first half, on a 7-0 run.
Davet started the run with a layup and Charlie Jacob netted two free throws. Nolan hit a jumper on a pass from Hayden Doyle and Hardy added a free throw to close out the run.
The Warriors strung together a run of their own, scoring the next five points on free throws from Tyler Deithloff and Jackson Parks and a layup from Seasn Coman.
A 3-pointer from Nolan and a dunk from Davet gave the Bears a 56-32 lead with 13:31 left on the clock and forcing a Hendrix timeout.
The Bears continued to dominate offensively, closing out the game with back-to-back 3-pointers from Tyler Carlson and Jabari Chiphe, giving the Bears the 80-46 win.
Nolan led all scorers with 22 points to go with six rebounds. Davet also reached double-digits with 14 points as well as three blocks. Hardy finished with a team-high nine rebounds as well as four points while Jacob scored nine points and had three steals. David Windley also had three steals as well as six points.
