RESULTS
Granville, Ohio, December 2, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming and diving teams opened competition at the 2021 Denison Invitational on Thursday.
After day one of competition, the No. 6 men's team sits in third place with 385 points, behind Denison with 691.5 points and Emory with 618.5 points. The No. 13 women's team is in fourth with 263 points, behind Denison with 658 points, Emory with 540 points and Eastern Michigan with 376 points.
Men
In the first race of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, WashU's team of Barclay Dale, Kevin Hao, Jonathan Ma and Austin Bick took fourth place with a NCAA B cut time of 1:21.91. The 'A' team from Denison won the field in 1:20.03.
Junior Mason Kelber was the top finisher for the Bears in the 500 freestyle, finishing second with a NCAA B cut of 4:26.15, shaving nearly three seconds off his preliminary time. First-year Pace Edwards took sixth with a time of 4:30.95 and first-year Ryan Hillery finished seventh in 4:31.40, both hitting NCAA B cuts.
Hao was the lone WashU swimmer to compete in the finals of the 200 IM, finishing ninth overall with a time of 1:52.66. Senior Nathan Katz took second in the B final and 11th overall, swimming a NCAA B cut time of 1:51.07. First-year Jonathan Kim tied for 16th overall with a time of 1:52.71.
Dale was the top finisher for the Bears in the 50 freestyle, tying for seventh with a time of 20.66. Bick won the B final for 10th overall, swimming a time of 20.69.
In the 400 medley relay, the team of Alexander McCormick, Hao, Dale and Bick took sixth place with a NCAA B cut of 3:19.69. The team of Kyle Wolford, Katz, Mason Rhode and Kelber finished seventh with a NCAA B cut of 3:19.96.
Women
The team of Abby Wilson, Sandra Meszaros, Noelle Diclemente and Grace Carey opened the day with a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, swimming a NCAA B cut time of 1:34.23. The group of Amanda Yu, Lauren Antonowich, Caroline Deluca and Kayleigh Lewis finished seventh with a time of 1:37.09.
Meszaros was the top finisher in the 500 freestyle, taking 18th place with a time of 5:07.80.
Sophomore Eve Kearns was the top finisher for the Bears in the 200 IM, taking 14th overall with a time of 2:09.44. Senior Grace Wakiyama finished 16th in 2:09.90.
Wilson won the 50 freestyle B final to take 10th overall, swimming a time of 23.85. Carey finished 17th overall with a time of 24.21.
In the final race of the day, the 400 medley relay, the team of Wilson, Wakiyama, Meszaros and Carey took third with a NCAA B cut time of 3:46.38. The team of Deluca, Max Teng, Mikayla Klein and Riyapreet Sahota finished eighth, swimming a time of 3:54.63.
WashU is back at Denison for day two of three tomorrow. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with finals slated for 6 p.m.
