Box Score Decatur, Ill. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team's four-game winning streak came to a halt on Sunday afternoon, following the Bears' 72-65 loss at Millkin.
WashU slips to 1-3 in road contests this season and drops to 4-5 overall on the year.
Despite outrebounding the Big Blue 43-30, WashU committed 25 turnovers in the loss, as the Big Blue tallied 13 blocked shots and 12 total steals.
It was a rare slow start for the Bears, as they shot just 2-10 from the field to open the game and Millikin pulled ahead 16-9. In the first nine minutes of the contest, the Big Blue shot nearly 70 percent from field.
Trailing 19-9 with 2:30 left in the quarter, WashU stormed back with a 10-0 run to close the period and even the score. Throughout the run the Bears connected on four consecutive field goals, including back-to-back jumpers from Samantha Weaver.
WashU carried its momentum over into the second period and were able to take the lead multiple times. Tied at 33, Jessica Brooks knocked down a three to push the Bears in front 36-33 with 4:13 left before halftime.
However, Millikin would finish the half on an 11-2 run after the Bears were held without a field goal in the final four minutes. MU shot 61 percent (17-28) in the first half and were 4-6 from three-point territory.
Millikin opened the third quarter with a quick 7-2 run and WashU faced its first double-digit deficit of the contest at 51-40.
Both teams had trouble scoring consistently in the frame, but MU would later increase its advantage out to 12, marking their largest lead of the afternoon, as they outscored the Bears 13-9 in the period.
WashU faced a 57-47 deficit to open the fourth, but the Bears made a late push and cut the lead down to five twice, outscoring the Big Blue 18-15 in the quarter.
Later in the action, the Bears would slice the lead down to just four at 66-62 following a three from Naomi Jackson with 49 seconds left.
Gaining possession back with 32 seconds left, WashU had multiple opportunities to cut the lead down to one possession, but the Bears ended up committing back-to-back turnovers.
Three Bears finished in double figures scoring as Naomi Jackson and Sammi Matoush each tabbed 13 points to lead the way offensively.
Samantha Weaver scored 11 points off the bench and recorded eight rebounds, marking a team-high.
Brenna Loftus, Karisa Grandison, and Jessica Brooks all chipped in with six points each.
The Bears finished with 24 points in the paint and 24 fastbreak points.
WashU is back at the Field House on December 31 at 3:00 p.m. against Westminster.
