Chicago, Ill., November 6, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming and diving teams concluded competition at the D3 Shootout, held at Chicago on Friday and Saturday.
The meet featured seven of the best teams in Division III on both the men's and women's side.
The men's team finished in second place with 421 points, right behind Chicago, which won with 429 points. The women's team took third place with 342.5 points and Chicago won with 422 points.
Men
The day opened with the 400 medley relay. The team of Alexander McCormick, Kevin Hao, Barclay Dale and Austin Bick finished in second with a time of 3:20.30, hitting an NCAA B cut.
Junior Mason Kelber won the first individual race of the day, the 500 freestyle, racing to a time of 4:32.48, hitting an NCAA B cut. First-year Ryan Hillery also hit an NCAA B cut, winning the B final in 4:33.19.
Dale won the 100 butterfly, hitting an NCAA B cut of 48.77. Junior Jonathan Ma took second in the B final and ninth overall with a time of 50.07.
Hao claimed the top spot in the 200 breaststroke, racing to an NCAA B cut time of 2:01.30. Senior Nathan Katz also hit an NCAA B cut, winning the B final in 2:02.45.
McCormick led the field in the 200 backstroke, winning with an NCAA B cut time of 1:48.92. Ma won the B final, swimming to a time of 1:53.64.
Bick was the top finisher for the Bears in the 100 freestyle, finishing in third with a time of 46.00. Kelber finished second in the B final and ninth overall with a time of 46.37.
In the final individual event of the day, Hao won the field with a time of 1:52.41. Katz won the B final and took eighth overall, swimming to a time of 1:51.99.
The Bears closed out the swimming portion of the day with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Bick, Ma, Kelber and Dale notched a time of 1:23.73.
Women
The team of Abby Wilson, Grace Wakiyama, Sandra Meszaros and Riyapreet Sahota opened the day with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay, swimming to an NCAA B cut time of 3:49.92.
Sophomore Eve Kearns was the top finisher for the Bears in the 500 freestyle, taking seventh with a time of 5:24.61. Sahota finished third in the B final and 10th overall with a time of 5:11.74.
Meszaros, a junior, won the field in the 100 butterfly, hitting an NCAA B cut time of 55.41. Senior Grace Carey finished fifth in the B final, racing to a time of 58.85.
Wakiyama was the top finisher for the Bears in the 200 breaststroke, taking fourth with a time of 2:22.54. First-year Alice Mao finished seventh in the B final with a time of 2:27.69.
Wilson, a senior, was the top finisher for WashU in the 200 backstroke, racing to an NCAA B cut time of 2:02.51. Kearns finished fourth in the B final with a time of 2:11.36.
Meszaros was the top finisher for the Bears in the 100 freestyle, swimming to a time of 52.22. Sahota finished fourth in the B final with a time of 53.78.
In the final individual race of the day, the 200 IM, Carey was the top finisher for WashU, taking fifth after recording a time of 2:12.14. Wakiyama finished sixth in the B final with a time of 2:14.22.
WashU wrapped up the swimming portion with a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Noelle Diclemente, Carey, Wilson and Kearns raced to a time of 1:37.60.
On the boards, first-year Roslyn Tischke took second on the 3-meter with a score of 206.35.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, November 20 when they hit the road for the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational at 2 p.m.
