RESULTS
Chicago, Ill., November 5, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming and diving teams sent a small squad to the D3 Shootout at the University of Chicago, which began on Friday evening.
Following the first day of competition, the WashU men's team sits in first place with 215 points and the women's team is in third with 170.5 points.
Men
In the first race of the day, the 200 medley relay, the team of Alex McCormick, Kevin Hao, Barclay Dale and Austin Bick took first with a time of 1:32.13, edging out second-place Swarthmore which finished in 1:32.31.
Senior Nathan Katz won the first individual race of the day, the 400 IM, racing to a time of 3:56.60, nearly five seconds faster than second place. Hao took first in the B final with a time of 4:01.52.
The top finisher in the 200 freestyle was junior Mason Kelber who took fourth with a time of 1:41.56. First-year Ryan Hillery finished fourth in the B final and 11th overall, swimming to a time of 1:41.33.
Dale won the 50 freestyle, swimming a season-best time of 20.71 and earning 18 points for the Bears. Bick won the B final with a time of 21.18.
Junior Jonathan Ma won the 200 butterfly, racing to a time of 1:49.08. Hillery won the B final in 1:51.28, taking eighth overall.
The top finisher for the Bears in the 100 backstroke was McCormick, a sophomore, who took third with a time of 51:06. Dale won the B final with a time of 50.56.
Hao was the top finisher for the Bears in the 100 breaststroke, taking second with a time of 56.02. Katz took second in the B final and ninth overall with a time of 56.93, cutting more than three seconds off his season-best.
The Bears closed out the day with a second-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay as the team of Ma, Kelber, Hillery and Bick raced to a time of 6:46.69.
On the diving side, first-year Elliot Polikowski finished in sixth place on the 1-meter board with a score of 156.75.
Women
WashU opened up the day with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay as the team of Abby Wilson, Grace Wakiyama, Grace Carey and Sandra Meszaros swam to a time of 1:44.48.
The top Bears' finisher in the 400 IM was sophomore Eve Kearns who took fifth with a time of 4:38.87.
Meszaros was the top finisher for WashU in the 200 freestyle, finishing third with a time of 1:52.39, just .10 behind second place. First-year Riyapreet Sahota took fourth in the B final for an 11th place finish overall with a time of 1:56.47.
Carey was the top Bears' finisher in the 50 freestyle, swimming to a fifth-place time of 24.63. Junior Noelle Declimente finished third in the B final and 10th overall with a time of 24.37.
Meszaros claimed victory in the 200 butterfly, racing to a time of 2:02.24, edging second place which finished in 2:02.87. Kearns finished third in the B final, swimming to a time of 2:08.70.
Wilson, a senior, was the top finisher for WashU in the 100 backstroke, racing to a time of 56.67. Carey finished third in the B final with a time of 59.38.
In the final individual race of the day, Wakiyama was the top finisher for the Bears, tying for fourth place with a time of 1:05.24. Sahota finished third in the B final with a time of 1:06.69.
WashU's team of Kearns, Sahota, Diclemente and Alice Mao finished seventh in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:59.14.
First-year Roslyn Tischke finished fourth on the 1-meter board with a score of 214.40.
The Bears close out the D3 Shootout tomorrow, starting at 11:30 a.m.
