Swimming and Diving Wins at Illinois Wesleyan

Bloomington, Ill., November 20, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming and diving teams both won the 2021 IWU Invite hosted by Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 6 men's team won with a total of 123 points while the No. 13 women's team totaled 128 points.

Women

The women's team opened the day with a win in the 200 medley relay, breaking the pool record in the process. The team of Caroline Deluca, Grace Wakiyama, Grace Carey and Noelle Diclemente won with a time of 1:48.75, breaking the previous pool record of 1:48.77 set by ISU in 2018.

Lauren Antonowich was the top finisher for WashU in the 200 freestyle, taking third in 2:00.43. Lauren Waire finished fourth with a time of 2:03.12.

The Bears swept the top two spots in the 200 IM, led by Sandra Meszaros who finished first with a time of 2:12.39. Eve Kearns finished second in 2:13.40.

Kayleigh Lewis won the field in the 50 freestyle, swimming a time of 25.70. Grace Uldrich took third with a time of 25.87.

Kearns won the 100 butterfly, racing to a time of 59.62 while Amanda Yu finished in third with a time of 1:01.34.

Meszaros won her second race of the day, claiming victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.16. The Bears swept the top four spots as Carey finished second in 55.04, Riyapreet Sahota took third with a time of 55.39 and Diclemente took fourth in 55.44.

Isabella Barrientos was the top finisher for the Bears in the 500 freestyle, taking second with a time of 5:19.51. Wakiyama claimed third in 5:28.65.

Deluca was victorious in the 100 backstroke, winning with a time of 1:01.09. Alice Han took second in 1:02.43 while Barrientos finished third with a time of 1:02.65 and Natalia Castillo took fourth in 1:02.71.

In the 100 breaststroke, Max Teng took the top spot with a time of 1:07.27. Abby Liff finished in second with a time of 1:09.75 while Emily Guo took third in 1:09.83. Alice Mao claimed fourth in 1:10.48 and Rachel Jin took fifth in 1:11.81.

The Bears closed out the day with a win in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Diclemente, Wakiyama, Carey and Sahota won in 1:40.63.

On the diving side, Rosie Finglass won the 1-meter with a total score of 388.15. She followed that up with a win on the 3-meter board with a score of 244.45.

Men

The men also opened up the day with a win in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Alex McCormick, Jonathan Kim, Jonathan Ma and Austin Bick won in 1:36.46.

WashU swept the top 10 spots in the 200 freestyle, led by Kai Garren who won in 1:45.66. Mark Lipkin finished second in 1:45.95 and Kevin Hao took third with a time of 1:47.55.

The Bears also claimed the top 10 spots in the 200 IM, led by Mason Kelber who won with a time of 1:56.42. Kim took second in 1:56.64 and Danny Sibley finished third with a time of 1:59.29.

Ma was the victor in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.81. Michael Kincheloe took second with a time of 21.96.

Ma also won the next event – the 100 butterfly – with a time of 50.53. Hao took second, swimming a time of 52.94 and Mason Rhode finished third with a time of 53.41.

Garren won his second race of the day, claiming the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.93. Lipkin too second in 48.30 and Zach Halawa finished third in 48.50.

Sibley took first in the 500 freestyle, racing to a time of 4:47.73. Kenneth Yeh finished third with a time of 4:51.85 and Rick Reinhard finished fourth in 4:52.67.

Kyle Wolford won the field in the 100 backstroke, finishing first with a time of 53.99. Nathan Katz took second in 55.58 and Nolan Shields finished third in 56.70.

In the 100 breaststroke, Kim was victorious, winning in 58.49 while Kelber took second with a time of 1:01.53. Nathan Lin finished third in 1:03.34 and Matthew Larsen took fourth in 1:05.00.

The Bears wrapped up the day with a win in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Barclay Dale, Austin Bick, Ma and Ryan Hillery won the field in 1:26.19.

WashU now takes a break from competition until Thursday, December 2 when it heads to the three-day Denison Invitational.
