Box Score St. Louis, Mo., November 16, 2021 – The No. 18 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team dropped a road contest to Webster, 72-60, on Tuesday evening. The Bears are now 1-1 on the season.
WashU held a slight lead until midway through the first half when Webster took over. The Bears, however, never let the lead get past a handful of points and only trailed five at the half.
A jumper from junior Kevin Davet at the 17:18 mark gave WashU its first lead of the game, which was extended at the 16:03 mark on a Justin Hardy 3-pointer.
The Gorloks pulled even at seven following layups from Karl Moore and Mark Moore, but graduate student Jack Nolan drained a 3-pointer a few seconds later to give the Bears a slight 10-7 lead with 11:18 on the clock.
Another 3-pointer from Nolan and a layup from senior Kameron Mack extended WashU's lead to 15-9 at the midway mark.
Webster's Bryce Woolridge and Jacob Witaschek hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 15 and force WashU to call a timeout. The Gorloks came out of the break to score the next five points and take a 20-15 lead with 8:22 on the clock.
The Bears kept things close but could not put together enough of a run to overtake Webster's slight advantage. The teams exchanged baskets and WashU closed it to three points following a Nolan 3-pointer with 34 seconds left in the half.
WashU came out of the halftime break to score the first points on a layup from first-year Hayden Doyle. Webster, however, took its biggest lead of the game at that point after 3-pointers from Witaschek and Wynne Brown, Jr., giving the Gorloks a 46-37 lead with 17:31 left on the clock.
A layup from first-year Drake Kindsvater closed the gap back to three, 47-44, with 15:04 left in the game.
The Bears went on to tie things up, 51-51, with 10:27 remaining following a layup from Jake Wolf, a 3-pointer from Nolan and a layup from Hardy.
Following a Gorloks' timeout, the Bears took their first lead since the first half on a Wolf jumper. Webster, however, scored the next two baskets to take a 55-53 edge with 7:34 left.
A 3-pointer from Doyle gave the Bears a 56-55 advantage with just over six minutes left to play, but Webster followed that up with a 6-0 run to take a 61-56 lead.
Junior Matt Gonzalo scored the final points of the game with 1:30 remaining to cut the deficit back down to three points, but the Gorloks closed things out with a 9-0 run en route to the win.
Nolan led all scorers with 20 points to go with seven rebounds. Hardy had 12 points and seven rebounds as well as one block and one steal while Doyle finished with seven points and three rebounds. Mack also had seven rebounds, two assists and a block to go with three points.
Brown, Jr. registered a double-double for Webster with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Karl Moore finished with a game-high 18 rebounds as well as eight points and four blocks. Woolridge netted 14 points for the Gorloks.
The Bears will look to rebound on Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. game at Blackburn.
