Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla., March 11, 2018 – Senior Maggie Clapp went 2-for-4 and drove in a career-high four RBIs to lead the Washington University in St. Louis softball team to a 11-2 upset win over No. 16-ranked Ithaca College Sunday to open its 2018 Spring Break Trip in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Bears suffered a 12-2 loss in five innings to Rowan University in the second game.
WashU 11, #16 Ithaca 2 – Five Innings
The Bears recorded a season-high 12 hits in the first of six games in Florida. Senior Hera Tang (3-for-3, walk, RBI, two runs scored), junior Taylor Arends (2-for-4, RBI, two runs scored) and sophomore Mikaela Arredondo (2-for-3, walk, run scored) had multi-hit games for the Bears.
WashU scored six runs in its first at-bat on just two hits, and took advantage of two errors and four walks. Arends drove in the first run with a single to center, and then Clapp cleared the bases with a double to left.
The Bears added two runs in the third inning to extend the led to 8-0. Senior Mackenzie Gauden had a pinch-hit RBI single in the inning. Leading 8-2 in the fifth, the Bears added some insurance runs following RBIs by Tang, freshman Julia Flores and Clapp.
Senior Anna McKee tossed a complete-game allowing four hits and one earned run. The victory for McKee was the 20th of her career, tied for 10th most in school history.
Rowan 12, WashU 2 – Five Innings
The Bears fell behind 3-0 in the first after Rowan scored three unearned runs on just two hits off Clapp. WashU answered back with RBIs by Clapp and freshman Natasha Ramakrishnan.
Rowan (7-3) pushed across eight runs on seven hits in the third to extend the lead to 11-2.
Clapp suffered her second-straight defeat allowing eight hits and 10 runs (eight earned) in just two innings pitched. Freshman Abby Graegin was terrific out of the bullpen allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) in three innings.
The Bears were limited to four hits in the loss, and committed a season-high four errors.
WashU (2-2) continues play in the Diamond 9 Sunkissed Games with a pair of contests against Cortland at 1:30 p.m. (ET) and Susquehanna at 3:45 p.m. (ET).
BEAR NOTEBOOK:
• McKee moved into seventh in school history in strikeouts (202).
• Assistant coach Kaitlyn Dulac was a four-time all-conference honoree and a 2006 All-American at Ithaca.
