Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 26, 2017 – The No. 2 ranked and defending national champion Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team scored four second-half goals and handed Webster University its first loss of the season in a 4-0 victory Tuesday at Francis Field in St. Louis
WashU improved to 8-0-1 and and ran its unbeaten streak to 23 games dating back to last season, while Webster fell to 8-1.
The Bears outshot Webster 17-2 in the first half, and WashU put six shots on goal. Senior Gillian Myers had a great opportunity in the 12th minute when her shot from 20 yards out went off the crossbar, and then junior Maggie Crist had a point blank shot in the 30th minute that was saved by Webster goalkeeper Aly Miller.
Sophomore Taylor Cohen scored on a give-and-go with sophomore Jesse Rubin just 12 seconds into the second half to put WashU up for good. The goal for Cohen was her conference-leading ninth of the season.
Less than five minutes later, junior Hannah Menard scored from 25 yards out after senior Kelly's Von Zup's free kick was blocked.
Freshman Ellie Deconinck added a goal in the 71st minute, and then junior Audrey Freeman drilled a free kick from 25 yards out in the 88th minute to round out the scoring for the Bears.
WashU outshot Webster 36-3 for the game, and had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Emma Greenfield and sophomore Katy Hutson split time in goal and recorded the sixth shutout of the season for the Bears. Greenfield improved to 5-0 and has allowed just one goal in 489:30.
WashU opens conference play at Emory University (6-2) on Saturday, Sept. 30. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Atlanta, Ga.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Webster, 17-0-1, and the Bears have won the last 16 meetings between the two teams … The goal for Freeman and Menard were the first of their career … WashU is 5-0-1 at home this year, and unbeaten in its last 27 games at Francis Field … The Bears have outscored their opponents 28-4 this season.
