ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After honoring the memory of all the lives lost and affected by the Sept. 11 attacks, the No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team came from behind to pick up a 2-1 non-conference win over visiting Hanover on Friday afternoon at Francis Olympic Field.
The Bears remain unbeaten this season, improving to 3-0-1 overall.
The Panthers broke the scoreless play in the 30th minute when John Azzara took a pass from Joe Luther off a defensive misstep on the right side and scored the game's first goal for the 1-0 lead.
However, that lead only lasted just over a minute as senior
Ethan Wirtschafter found sophomore
Wole Adeoye inside the box, who beat the keeper to level the game at a goal apiece at 31:06.
The score would remain tied the rest of the half and for the first six minutes of the second before it was Wirtschafter's time to score as he took a pass from first-year
Nick Lam and gave the Bears the lead at 51:17, 2-1.
The score would hold up as WashU secured its third win of the season.
Adeoye led all players with five shots, including three on goal. Wirtschafter's lone shot was his game-winning goal.
Senior
Cal L'Hommedieu played all 90 minutes in goal to earn the win. He finished with five saves.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 13, when they host Rhodes at 4 p.m.
