ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw with the visiting Rhodes Lynx on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the weekend's action. With the tie, the Bears move to 3-0-2 on the season and remain unbeaten.
It was a relatively quiet first half in shots, with the score remaining tied at 0-0 after 45 minutes. WashU led 4-1 in shots in the opening half, taking its best opportunity in the 38th minute. The Bears were fouled just inside the goal box, allowing senior
Colin Link to take a penalty kick. However, it was saved by the Lynx's goalie to preserve the 0-0 score.
The second half came with a flurry of attempts on both sides, but it was not until 76:53 when Brady Janes scored his first goal to put Rhodes up 1-0. Not even five minutes later, Janes scored his second goal to give the Lynx a two-goal lead, 2-0.
Just over a minute later, at 82:49, senior
Ethan Wirtschafter was fouled in the goal box to earn the second penalty kick attempt of the contest for WashU. This time, the Bears made the most of it, cutting the Lynx lead down to just one with a little more than six minutes to play.
Early in the 87th minute, the Bears nearly had a third PK, but the foul was just outside the box for a free kick. Link stepped up and took the shot and buried the ball in the top-right corner of the net, tying the contest at 2-2 with less than four minutes remaining.
Neither team was able to get off a shot in the last few minutes as the game ended in the 2-2 tie.
As a team, WashU doubled up Rhodes in shots, 10-5, while taking 13 corner kicks to just one for the Lynx.
Link led the Bears in shots with three total, including his PK and free kick shots.
