ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis men's track and field team competed in three separate meets on Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9. The Bears participated at the Billy Hayes Invitational hosted by Indiana, the Sycamore Open hosted by Indiana State, and the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invite hosted by St. Francis (Ill.).
No team scores were kept.
Top Finishes from Billy Hayes Invitational:
- 400m Hurdles
- 800m
- Junior William Frohling reached the top three with his time of 1:51.87 to finish third
- First-year Cameron Bettinger also finished in the top 10 with his ninth-place finish time of 1:52.64
Top Finishes from Sycamore Open:
- High Jump
- Javelin
- Junior Cal Newell claimed the event with his throw of 52.71m
- Long Jump
- Pole Vault
- Senior Hayden Kunkel won with his clear of 5.12m, marking the fourth best in Div. III this spring and fourth best in program history
- Junior Peter Lichtenberger also cleared 5.12m to finish second, due to tiebreakers
- Sophomore Zachary Duckworth was ninth with his leap of 4.87m
Top Finishes from St. Francis Fighting Chance:
- 5000m (Open)
- First-year Gavin O'Connor finished in 12th place, out of 91 athletes in the event with his time of 14:58.2
- 800m
- 1500m
- Senior James Corbett finished in sixth place to lead the Bears in the event with a time of 4:48.97
- Sophomore Max Sudrzynski also finished in the top 10 in ninth place with a time of 3:51.36
- Sophomore Caleb Brox was 15th out of the 36 competitors in the event with a time of 3:54.52
- 3000m Steeple (Invite Only)
- Junior Will Liu was third in the event, behind a pair of Div. II athletes, with a time of 9:19.70
- Sophomore Will Ruszkowski also finished near the top in seventh place with a time of 9:33.86
WashU will have one more opportunity to record an NCAA Championship qualifying mark on Wednesday, May 13 and Thursday, May 14 at the Augustana Last Chance Meet.
