CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team defeated beat No. 5 Babson 4-1 in the national semifinal, advancing to the title match for the second-straight year. The Bears will play No. 4 Wesleyan on Thursday in the national championship match at 1 p.m. ET.
Wesleyan beat No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-3 to advance.
Doubles
Babson took a 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
No. 1 junior
Eleanor Archer and sophomore
Caitlin Bui fell to No. 4 Matia Cristiani and Sandra Sikharulidze 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore
Sam Slowik and first-year
Lily Brecknock lost to Dana Kamal and Jolie Wang 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
No. 10 senior
Eliana Hanna and sophomore
Ally Lin were trailing Alessandra Cristiani and Elizabeth Shu 4-3 at No. 2 doubles when the point was clinched.
Singles
Bui won the first singles point for the Bears, defeating Shu 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Senior
Nina Moravek picked up the next point, beating Jolie Wang 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Senior
Amber Edmonds topped Tina Liu 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 5 singles.
Lin clinched the match for WashU, defeating Alessandra Cristiani 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4 singles.
No. 5 Hanna won the first set of No. 1 singles against Matia Cristiani 7-6 (7-5) before falling in the second set 6-2. She was down 1-0 in the third set at the conclusion of the match.
No. 19 Archer won the first set over Sikharulidze 6-4 at No. 2 singles and lost the second set 6-1. The third set was tied 3-3 when the match was clinched.
This is the second time in program history that the Bears have reached the title match. The first time was last year when they won it all.
