PREVIEW: No. 16/18 WashU Baseball Travels to Centre for NCAA Regional

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 16/18 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team has been selected to participate in the 2026 NCAA Div. III Baseball Tournament and will travel to Danville, Ky.  for their regional rounds beginning on Friday, May 15 on the campus of Centre (Ky.) at Gary Wright Field.

The Bears will face off against Aurora in their first game on Friday, May 15 at 11 a.m. ET. The other first round game will feature host Centre against (RV) Piedmont) at 2:30 p.m. ET. Teams will play through a double elimination bracket with the regional championship game on Sunday at 11 a.m. and the "if necessary" game immediately following.

About No. 16/18 WashU – Schedule / Roster / Stats
WashU enters the postseason ranked No.16 in the latest ABCA poll and No.18 in the most recent D3baseball.com poll. WashU finished the regular season with a 28-11 record overall while going 12-8 in the UAA. Five of the team's wins came over ranked opponents.

The Bears saw six players earn All-UAA honors, led by first-year Chance Cromer who was named the UAA Rookie of the Year. Four other Bears earned First Team honors: graduate Chase Brickley, senior Shane Pellegrino, sophomore Ryan Soong, and senior Isaac Zhang. Junior Anthony Equale was named Second Team All-UAA.

Pellegrino leads the UAA in batting average with a .397 while tallying 62 hits with 49 RBIs and 41 runs scored. He is slugging .628 for the season. Soong batted .349 in 34 games this season. He finished with 46 hits, 42 runs scored, and 29 RBIs. Of his 46 hits, he currently has seven doubles, five home runs, and a pair of triples.

Brickley finished the regular season with a 7-2 record in 12 appearances and 11 starts. In his 64.1 innings of work, he notched a 1.82 ERA along with 59 strikeouts and just 12 walks. He held opponents to a .218 batting average. Zhang is currently 5-0 in 13 appearances with 53.0 innings pitched. He has collected 40 strikeouts while walking just 17 batters. 

WashU is batting .321 as a team while collecting 415 hits with 88 doubles, 18 triples, and 15 home runs. They finished the regular season with 299 RBIs on 344 runs scored. On the mound, the Bears have a 3.70 ERA while securing 326 strikeouts to just 133 walks. They have held opponents to a .244 batting average.

The Bears face off against Aurora in the opening round game on Friday at 11 a.m. ET.
 
About (RV) Piedmont – Schedule / Roster / Stats
The Lions enter the NCAA Tournament with a 30-13 overall record after claiming the CCS Tournament title in a 14-4, run-rule win over Belhaven in the championship. Piedmont is also receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll.

Six Lions earned all-conference honors from the CCS led by CCS Pitcher of the Year and First Team selection, Andrew Misirly. Joining him on the first team were Cole Ellis, Cody Funk, Carter Few, Luke Manry, and Drew O'Neill. Piedmont head coach Justin Scali earned CCS Coach of the Year honors while Sean Bailey was the All-Sportsmanship Team representative.

As a team, the Lions are hitting .347 and scored 372 runs with 81 doubles, 18 triples, and 17 home runs. The pitching staff has an ERA of 4.93 while tallying 278 strikeouts while walking just 154 batters. They have held opponents to a .289 batting average.

Piedmont will take on host Centre in the first round on Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
 
About Aurora – Schedule / Roster / Stats
The Spartans have a 31-12 overall record after winning the NACC tournament championship with a 10-9 victory of Milwaukee School of Engineering.

AU is led by First-Team All-Conference performers Joe Lukancic, Tyler Patton, Isaac Goddard, Ryan Buck and Zack Tarrant. The Spartans pitching led by all-conference selection Conner Hogan.

As a team the Spartans are hitting .360 and having scored 429 runs with 43 home runs, eight triples and 113 doubles and rank among the top in Division III in several statistical categories. As a pitching staff, the Spartans have a 5.09 earned run average and opponents hit .283 against. As a fielding team, the Spartans are fielding .967 and have committed 45 errors in 43 games played.

Aurora will face off against WashU in the first round on Friday at 11 a.m. ET
 
About Centre – Schedule / Roster / Stats
The Colonels ended the regular season with a 31-13 overall record and earned their spot in the NCAA Tournament by claiming the SAA Tournament with an 11-3 win over Rhodes in the championship game.

Ten different Colonels received All-SAA honors, highlighted by Pitcher of the Year Isaac Rone. Joining Rone on the First Team was Ayden Lohr, and Ben Prather. Second Team All-SAA honors went to Chase Austin and Nolan Asher. Evan Weyler, Graham Johnson, Aidan Carr, Aaron Lopez, and Zach Heavern all were named Honorable Mention.

The Colonels batted .315 as a team for the regular season and scored 353 runs with 75 doubles, 42 home runs, and 14 triples. They also collected 315 RBIs. On the mound, they currently have a 4.05 ERA while tallying 356 strikeouts to 163 walks. They have held opponents to a .244 batting average.

Centre will play Piedmont in its first-round game on Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
 
WashU vs. NCAA Tournament Field
The Bears have played four teams in the tournament field and own a 5-4 record against them:
  • Millikin: W, 3-1 (2/21)
  • No. 15 Webster: W, 10-0 (2/22)
  • Transylvania: W, 9-4 (3/13); L, 6-10 (3/14); L, 4-6 (3/14)
  • Chicago: L, 4-8 (3/27); L, 1-3 (3/28); W, 12-2 (3/28); W, 11-10 (3/29)

The 2026 Championship
The 64-team championship bracket was revealed during a selection show on Monday, May 11 live streamed here on NCAA.com. The tournament feature will feature 41 automatic qualifiers and 23 at-large bids. 

The regional round of games will begin on Friday, May 15, at various locations across the country. A champion will be crowned on Thursday, June 4, at the Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake, Ohio.
