Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stone Wins 700th Career Game As A Head Coach As No. 13 WashU Women's Basketball Downs Spartans, 81-76

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – No. 13 Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball head coach Lisa Stone has joined an illustrious group of college women's basketball head coaches with her 700th career win on Sunday in the Bears' 81-76 win over visiting Case Western Reserve at the Field House.

Stone now sits at 700-389 in her career as a head coach, with stops at all three NCAA levels.

Against the Spartans on Sunday, junior Lexy Harris recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 27 points and 12 rebounds and was one of two players with 20+ points as classmate Sidney Rogers tied a career-high with 24 points. Senior Jordan Rich led all players in rebounding with 14 boards.

It was a slow start to the contest, with Harris scoring the first points on a layup at 8:01 in the first quarter. Rogers (7:00) and junior Alyssa Hughes (6:36) hit back-to-back threes to put the Bears up 8-0. It was not until Emily Plachta hit a layup at 6:15 that CWRU got on the scoreboard.

WashU would see their lead get back to eight with 2:14 left in the period on another three by Hughes before the Spartans chipped away at the lead as the Bears led 20-17 going into the second quarter.

Another slow start to a quarter was followed by a series of quick points by both teams, seeing CWRU tie the contest at 23-23 on a made free throw at 6:48. WashU answered with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes.

The Spartans tried to answer, but every time they would score, the Bears responded with their own points as WashU led 41-33 at halftime, thanks to a last-second three from Rogers right before the intermission.

The beginning of the third quarter continued the game's trend of back-and-forth play, with CWRU slowly chipping away before eventually taking their first lead of the contest on a layup from Mya Hartjes at 3:46, making the score 46-45. WashU quickly answered with a three from Hughes and a jumper from Rogers to go back up by four, 50-46 at 2:52.

After cutting the lead back down to one, the Spartans' offense went cold the rest of the period, while the Bears' offense heated up with a 10-0 run starting with a jumper from sophomore Ava Blagojevich at 1:28, capped by a three from Rogers with six seconds left.

Leading 60-51 to start the fourth quarter, WashU saw their lead grow to 13 with a pair of free throws by Hughes and a layup from Harris, making it 64-51. CWRU would cut it down to eight several times before trimming it to just five points on a three-pointer with 3:31 left.

The Bears would push their lead back up to eight points with just 21 seconds left. The Spartans answered with a very quick 5-0 run before a pair of free throws by junior Catherine Goodwin with less than a second left sealed the win for WashU.

As a team, the Bears went 18-20 from the free throw line while also shooting 42.4% from the field. They also led CWRU in points off turnovers (19-10) and points in the paint (32-28).

WashU is on the road next weekend when they travel to No. 1 NYU on Friday, Feb. 20, with a scheduled 7:30 p.m. ET tipoff at the Paulson Center. The Bears travel to Brandeis for their final road contest of the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 22, with a 12 p.m. ET scheduled start time.
