Fourth Quarter Surge Sees No. 16 WashU Women's Basketball Fall To No. 1 NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A fourth-quarter surge by the top-ranked Violets of New York University saw the home team grab an 82-62 win over No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis on Friday evening at the Paulson Center.

Junior Lexy Harris led the Bears in scoring with 22 points, while both juniors Sidney Rogers and Sydney Starks reached double figures with 18 and 10 points, respectively. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Amelia Rosin grabbed seven rebounds to lead the team, while senior Jordan Rich took four steals from the Violets.

The first quarter started off slow for both teams, with WashU getting on the board first with a layup from Harris at 9:06. NYU hit a jumper of their own 30 seconds later to start a 7-0 run that finished at 5:47, taking a 7-2 lead. A layup from Rosin ended the scoring drought at 4:16, while a layup from Starks cut the lead down to just one at 3:46.

As the Violets regrew their lead to as many as four with 1:42 left in the period, the Bears closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run, with Rogers hitting a jumper at 1:25 and a three-pointer at 0:40 to lead 16-15 going into the second period.

The Violets regained the lead for good at 8:35 with a layup, holding the Bears to their first basket of the period at 4:07, a layup from junior Catherine Goodwin. As she was fouled on the play, she also hit her free throw to tie the score up at 19-19.

NYU answered over the next three minutes with a 14-0 run that included four three-pointers. Rogers hit another three-pointer of her own with 33 seconds left in the half to trim the deficit down to 11, 33-22, going into the locker room.

A big third quarter awaited the Bears as they trimmed the lead down to as few as six by 2:58 in the period, but each time, NYU answered. The Violets put the lead back up to nine twice in the final minute and a half before a layup and free throw from Harris saw WashU trail once more by just six heading into the final period.

Once again, the fourth quarter saw NYU answer every made basket by the Bears with one of their own, and more. The Violets outscored WashU 28-14 in the final 10 minutes, including the final six points for the 82-62 win.

The Bears had the slight edge in rebounding, 33-32, but made the most of their offensive boards with 20 second-chance points to just eight for NYU.

WashU makes the trip up to Waltham, Mass., for a 12 p.m. ET tip at Brandeis on Sunday.
