Late (RV) Carnegie Mellon Run Downs No. 13 WashU Women's Basketball, 72-59

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – (RV) Carnegie Mellon capitalized on cold shooting late in the fourth quarter to escape with a 72-59 win over the No. 13 Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team on Friday night in the Field House.

Junior Lexy Harris recorded her ninth double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bears in both categories. Classmate Catherine Goodwin also reached double figures in points with 12.

After the Tartans made a quick layup to start the game, both teams missed a series of shots before Harris made a layup to tie the score at 2-2 with 8:05 on the clock. Just under a minute later, junior Alyssa Hughes hit a three to give the Bears the lead 5-2.

A layup from junior Amelia Rosin at 4:11 and a pair of free throws from Goodwin at 3:34 extended the WashU lead up to seven, 11-4. The Bears maintained that lead until a late three cut it down to four, 13-9, going into the second quarter.

CMU slowly chipped away at the WashU lead and tied the contest at 17-17 on a layup at 6:34. Just 15 seconds later, senior Jordan Rich put the Bears back in front. With WashU leading 23-19, the Tartans made back-to-back three-pointers at 3:38 and 3:00 to regain the lead for the first time since 2-0.

After trading baskets, junior Sidney Rogers hit a jumper at 1:42 to give WashU the lead once again, and a last-second free throw by Rich put the Bears ahead 28-25 going into the locker room.

WashU came out of the break on a hot streak and eventually took a six-point lead with 6:32 on the clock on a jumper by Hughes. However, CMU answered and tied the contest at 37-37 on a tip-in by Aleena Dinker at 4:18.

The Tartans regained the lead and pushed it to three points, but a late triple by Rogers tied the score at 44-44 going into the final 10 minutes.

The two teams traded baskets early in the final quarter, with WashU holding a slim one-point lead, 52-51, with 7:34 left to play. The Bears quickly extended the lead to eight points on a tip-in by Harris at 5:46, making it 59-51.

CMU's response started at 4:39 with a jumper before the Tartans hit three consecutive three-pointers to take a six-point lead with just 2:57 to play. The visitors then forced five turnovers in the final four minutes while scoring the next 15 points to close out the contest on a 21-0 run and leave with the 72-59 win.

WashU is back on the court on Sunday when they welcome Case Western Reserve to the Field House for a 12 p.m. contest.
