WashU Men's Soccer Scores Season-High Seven Goals In Win Over Webster

FENTON, Mo. – The goals kept coming for the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team on Wednesday night as the Bears picked up a 7-2 win over Webster in an all-St. Louis matchup in Fenton at the World Wide Technologies Soccer Park.

It did not take long for WashU to get on the board in the first half. After the Gorloks last touched the ball, sending it out past the end line, the Bears were awarded a corner kick. First-year Nick Lam stepped up and sent the ball into the box where senior Ethan Wirtschafter leaped and headed the ball into the goal to give WashU the 1-0 lead just 6:05 into the contest.

Just over three minutes later, the Bears would take a deflection at midfield, where they took the ball up the left side before first-year Thomas McNiff tapped the ball to junior Quentin Wallace, who spun and tapped it to senior Colin Link for a one-touch shot to the bottom right for the goal. The insurance goal was put in at 9:25.

After Webster scored in the 31st minute, the Bears quickly responded in the 36th minute. WashU earned a free kick about 12 yards outside, in front of the goal. First-year Sebastian Valdes sent the ball right in front of the goalie, where it fell to the ground. After a few quick touches, senior Nik Avillo corralled it and tapped it to classmate Carter Sasser, who fired it behind the Gorloks to put WashU back in front by two, 3-1, at 35:41.

Webster would once again cut the lead down to one in the 40th minute; however, the Bears once again answered before the horn sounded for halftime. On the ensuing kickoff, WashU got the ball up the left side. Webster then picked up a foul that gave WashU a free kick, where Lam would send the ball into the box, where it again found the head of Wirtschafter, who sent the ball to the back of the net. The goal gave the Bears the 4-2 lead at the break.

Not letting up, WashU earned a free kick after senior Peter Cirbo was found just outside to the left of the box. Link would step up to the ball and lob it into the area in front of the Gorloks' goalie. Avillo would leap up over a defender to score another header goal for WashU just 5:40 into the second half as the Bears took a 5-2 lead.

Not done scoring, WashU added its second corner-kick goal of the contest in the 65th minute. Cirbo would take the corner on the right side, where it was put to the head of Sasser on the left side. He tapped the ball back to the right for his second goal of the contest at 64:09.

The final Bears' goal came with just under 10 minutes left in the contest. After taking the ball up the right side, senior Yash Kshirsagar would send the ball on goal in the box to Cirbo, who fired a goal to the upper left side of the net at 80:27. WashU held on as they secured the 7-2 win.

Wirtschafter led all with four shots, all on goal, while scoring a pair of goals. Sasser added two goals on his two shots of the contest for the Bears.

Senior Cal L'Hommedieu picked up his eighth win of the season, playing all 90 minutes and making two saves.

WashU is back in action this Saturday, Oct. 10, as it returns to UAA play when it hosts No. 7 Case Western Reserve. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. The game is also serving as the team's The Hidden Opponent and Love Wins contest.
