Viscovich Nets Game Winner as No. 1 WashU Women’s Soccer Edges No. 5 MIT 2-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its biggest test of the season so far, the No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team came out on top over No. 5 MIT, besting the Engineers 2-1 on the road. The Bears are now 11-0 on the year.

WashU struck first in the ninth minute as sophomore Monica Morales-Martinez scored off her own rebound for a 1-0 lead. It marks Morales-Martinez's third goal of the year.

MIT evened it up with just over three minutes left in the first half as Amara Ukomadu scored on an assist from Chloe Dai.

The game-winner came in the 57th minute as MIT was whistled for a foul in the box and senior Sophie Viscovich put in the resulting penalty kick. It was Viscovich's sixth goal of the season and second of the weekend.

As the Bears' defenders locked in to keep MIT from scoring the game-tying goal, the Engineers had just one more shot on goal in the 83rd minute from Claire Zhang, which was saved by junior goalkeeper Kassidy Lanthier.

WashU recorded 16 shots with nine on goal to MIT's nine with five on goal. Each team had three corner kicks.

Morales-Martinez had four shots with three on goal while Viscovich tallied three shots with two on goal. Senior Keira Smyser had two shots, both on goal.
