WashU Men's Soccer Opens UAA Play With 3-2 Win Over Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team opened UAA play on Saturday with a 3-2 win over Brandeis on the road. With the win, the Bears improve to 7-1-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the UAA.

The Judges did not wait long to get on the board in their homecoming game, scoring early in the second minute of play to take a 1-0 lead at 1:22.

WashU settled in and would control the ball in its half of the field, taking five of the next six shots in the contest.

In the 32nd minute, the Bears played a shot ball in off a throw-in that was headed out before first-year Henry Wong-Foy tapped it to senior Ethan Wirtschafter, who fired a goal to the upper left corner of the goal to level the game at 1-1.

Just over five minutes later, senior Colin Link stole the ball just inside the Bears' offensive third and dribbled down the left side before finding sophomore Casper Leary in the box. Leary then passed the ball across the box where it found the foot of Wong-Foy for the go-ahead goal at 37:33, putting WashU up 2-1.

After halftime, WashU would continue to control the ball and would add an insurance goal in the 59th minute. It was Wong-Foy once again finding a teammate, this time first-year Nick Lam, who fired a goal past a diving Brandeis goalie, putting the Bears ahead 3-1 at 58:42.

The Judges did not go away quietly as they would cut the lead down to one with a goal in the 89th minute, but could not complete the comeback as WashU left with a 3-2 win in the conference opener.

Both Wong-Foy and Lam finished with four shots. Wong-Foy finished the contest with four points, on one goal and two assists. Sophomore Sebastian Valdes added three shots for the Bears.

Senior Cal L'Hommedieu played all 90 minutes in goal to earn the win, making one save.

WashU remains on the road to start next week as it travels across St. Louis to take on Webster on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The contest will take place at the WWT Soccer Park in Fenton. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
