CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the first time in program history, the Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team won the National Championship, defeating Pomona-Pitzer 4-3 on Friday evening. The title marks the 27
th in WashU Athletics history and the second for the 2024-25 year.
Doubles
The Bears won No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 edge.
Junior
Amber Edmonds and first-year
Sam Slowik won the first match, defeating No. 20 Amelia Poor and Nyakiriri Kanefu 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Junior
Eliana Hanna and first-year
Ally Lin fell to Lauren Rha and Leticia Bazua Vazquez 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
No. 4 doubles duo of sophomore
Eleanor Archer and first-year
Caitlin Bui beat No. 5 Angie Zhou and Marissa Markey 6-3 at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point for WashU.
Singles
No. 36 Hanna won the first singles point, beating No. 41 Kanefu 6-1, 6-2 to give the Bears a 2-0 edge on the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer won its first point at No. 1 singles as No. 4 Zhou defeated No. 35 Archer 6-4, 6-1.
No. 44 Lin earned another point for the Bears to bring them one away from the title, beating No. 22 Markey 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
No. 21 Rha defeated No. 11 Bui 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Poor beat sophomore
Emily Chiasson at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, tying the match 3-3.
Junior
Nina Moravek battled to a three-set victory over Vazquez, falling 5-7 in the first set before coming back to win 6-1, 6-2 and clinch the national title.
Some of the Bears have more tennis ahead of them as Archer and Bui will continue playing in the individual championships, both as a doubles team and in the singles tournament.
