CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team beat No. 9 Johns Hopkins 4-1 on Wednesday in the national semifinal, earning its first trip to the title match in program history.
WashU will face No. 3 Pomona Pitzer in the national championship match on Friday at 5 p.m. PT.
Doubles
The Bears earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
The No. 4-ranked duo of sophomore
Eleanor Archer and first-year Caitin Bui defeated Jay Xiao and Lia Melvin 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Hopkins' No. 11 Ava Li and Kamila Wong beat junior
Amber Edmonds and first-year
Sam Slowik 2-6 at No. 2 doubles to bring the doubles point down to No. 3 doubles.
Junior
Eliana Hanna and first-year
Ally Lin clinched the doubles point, beating Sydney Langer and Sahana Sanjeev 7-5.
Singles
No. 11 Bui earned the first singles point at No. 2 singles, defeating Langer 6-0, 6-4.
Hopkins' made it a 2-1 match with a win at No. 6 singles at Wong beat junior
Nina Moravek 1-6, 5-7.
No. 36 Hanna bumped the Bears' lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 3 singles over Sahana Sanjeev 7-5, 7-5.
For the second match in a row, No. 44 Lin clinched the win for the Bears with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Melvin at No. 4 singles.
No. 35 Archer beat No. 42 Sophia Kim 7-5 in the first set at No. 1 singles before falling 4-6 in the second set. She was trailing 1-3 in the third set when the match was clinched.
Sophomore
Emily Chiasson fell to Ava Li 5-7 in the first set at No. 5 singles before coming back to win the second set 6-3. She was down 4-3 in the third set when the match ended.
