CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team took down No. 1 Chicago 4-3 in the national quarterfinal on Tuesday afternoon. This marks the first time in program history the Bears have reached the national semifinal.
WashU will play Johns Hopkins on Wednesday at 2 p.m. PT in the national semifinal.
Doubles
The No. 4 duo of sophomore
Eleanor Archer and first-year
Caitlin Bui defeated Charlotte Klein and Oliwia Mikos 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Junior
Amber Edmonds and first-year
Sam Slowik fell to Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo 2-6 at No. 2 doubles.
Junior
Eliana Hanna and first-year
Ally Lin clinched the doubles point for the Bears, defeating Erica Ekstrand and Lauren Khou 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3 doubles.
Singles
Chicago won the first singles point as Edmonds lost to No. 8 Clara Zou 0-6, 2-6 at No. 5 singles.
The Bears took a 2-1 match lead with a win at No. 1 singles as No. 35 Archer beat No. 9 Ekstrand 6-4, 6-1.
The Maroons tied the match at 2-2 as Nicole Geller topped No. 36 Hanna 4-6, 1-6 at No. 3 singles.
Junior
Nina Moravek gave the Bears a 3-2 edge at No. 6 singles. After losing the first set 5-7 to No. 49 Oliwia Mikos, she came back to win the second set 6-3 and the third 6-1 to clinch the point.
No. 11 Bui fell in three sets to No. 14 Sylwia Mikos at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-0, 6-7 (6-8) to once again even the score, at 3-3.
No. 44 Lin clinched the match for the Bears at No. 4 singles, beating No. 37 Sarena Biria 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
